New starter not working
 
i recently replaced a starter on a 525. New starter will not turn over from key but will turn over when jumping out the solenoid. I swapped the starter with a working starter from the other motor, same issue. I’m assuming I missed a simple wire but Verified wiring with the opposite motor. Any thoughts what I may have unplugged or missed while changing the starter out?

If you jumped the lugs on the remote solenoid and the starter turned the engine, the remote solenoid is faulty.

I thought that too. But since it was new out of the box I figured I’d try it on the other motor. On the other motor it turns over no problem with the key which means the solenoid is good.. so neither starter works on the starboard side but both work when installed on the port side.. the starter wire must not be getting power?. Seems to coincidental that something From the ignition to the starter failed at the same time as replacing the starter?

Okay. jumping the large lugs turns the starter. Good. The same solenoid on the other engine turns the starter with using the ignition switch. Good.

So, solenoid is good.

This means that either
1)the wire from the ignition switch (usually yellow w/ red stripe) is not sending power to the solenoid when key is turned to run
or 2) Solenoid is not grounded correctly.

So, check yellow/red stripe at ignition switch for 12 volts when you turn to start .
If has 12 volts check it at the solenoid.
If none there, check at the neutral safety switch at shifter.

BTW: You did quadruple check Shifter is in neutral right? :)

I think your missing what SB said the first time


jumped the lugs on the remote solenoid
From what I'm reading your talking about the solenoid on the starter and SB is talking about the slave solenoid (remote solenoid) which is on top the motor by the 50 amp breaker of next to the ECU. Jump across the top two terminals

So...been burned by the kill switch to! Always check gear shifter and kill switch! Seems we all typically learn the hard way. Swapping starters and solenoids and ****. sucks! Spent a couple hours floating to have a buddy show up to help and mess with the kill switch and it worked. Sucks...sorta!

I have heard the tethered safety kill switches are giving ppl problems. A solenoid is a relay that does some kind of work ,moving a valve position or engaging a bendix. A relay just transfers electrical power through a contact. They both have a coil and are enabled the same way. Start solenoid on starter does both engages bendix and makes contact mechanically via a magnet to supply starter with power. Start relay is the pic he showed you. So from key to safety kill switch then to start relay then to start solenoid. I know these guys know there stuff, it's for the ppl who arent familiar. I disabled my neutral safety switch. If you engine stalls while in gear, half the time it wont come back to neutral without turning the outrive which results with damaged cable or gearshift in upper case. Now if I forget it in gear and shut it down I can turn it over with key and pull tether off to get it back to neutral
