Mercruiser ing y back firing

Got a fresh BBC w merc ing. All new but occasionally backfires runs good at speed could black merc box do this ? 850 vacuum carb .Motor was on done everything looks good cap wires valve springs !!!! No tight valves ,has hydraulic cam any ideas????
