496 HO Hard to Start after sitting

Hey guys,

One of my motors is giving me a hard time. Starts up initially fine, runs like a champ, and is not setting off any alarms on my vessel view. BUT, if I turn it off, to say anchor out or dock for a bit, and then go back to start it up it just cranks. If I crank it long enough (excessively) it will fire up. Yesterday it did sputter a pair of times before I finally got it cycled on. If I turn it off after a run, and then try to fire it back up after say 5 minutes, it’s fine....but if we leave it for any longer period of time it just cranks.

Thoughts? Leaky injector causing it to flood after shut down? Bad coil? Something else?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Sounds like vapor lock. What's your serial number?

If it's a Gen 3 cool fuel engine and has been operated in salt water the Fuel Service Module (FSM) cooling passages are probably restricted. The FSM becomes heat soaked and causes vapor lock. The fix is to replace the FSM housing. If it's a Gen 2 cool fuel engine the low pressure fuel pump is probably bad. Either way always leave the blower running and crack the hatch to let the hot air out.

I bet its the port engine........

back at this issue again. Yes it is the port motor. Is this common?

Hard to start

I have exact same issue with both motors in fountain EC. Though it was vapor lock, but it’s flooding. No cool can, big aeromotive fuel pumps with Whipples. After years of cranking, last year pulled fuel pump fuse and cranked a few seconds and started right up. Also replaced injectors, no difference.....

Did you ever figure out the root problem?

Ive had 496's for 16 years in one boat or another. Is this a thing? Ive never heard of 496's vapor locking...

I would say have the injectors cleaned and fuel flushed out. Install another IAC. My IAC's use to give me problems upon start up every so often.

whats your fuel pressure, and what size whipples are you running

I'd check fuel pressure - auto zone will rent you a free tester. My starboard was giving me problems for 2 seasons. intermittent no starts. then worked fine. then no start. then fine. tried so many things. checked the fuel pressure of both - starboard was low. replaced the fuel pump, pain in the arse, but solved it right away.

W200ax 3.3l. Running at recommended fuel pressure (43psi at idle), TPS voltage correct, new IAC’s. New Injectors. New Plugs. Maybe I’ll replace wires, may be breaking down. Oh yea, new coils as well.
