We had our guides replaced...can’t comment on procedure but the machinest (who I trust) said heads were fine. Looking back I might have opted to just replace the heads like most are recommending.

Were they leaking water or worn guides? Cuz worn guides are bored out and liners pressed in, usually. Cableguy, how many years raw-water use? I am a little surprised these guys can spend the thousands of dollars they do on these engines and not run heat exchangers and antifreeze.

dont know if that was directed towards me but our guides were rotted. Here is a picture. You mention rot forming around the head where the guides seat. Ours didn’t do that at all. You can actually see the line where the guides were seated on the head. They are really clean.

CG,
SBI / Eloy has a guide that is available .003 oversize. Part number 140-9972 +3 This guide is .620" so he may have to ream the upper part of the hole to fit. The oversize guide will be .623"

Hope this helps,
Bill

They were leaking water. I saw the guide and it didnt look pitted it was simply broken, cracked around it. Its a 1996 boat with 666 hours of freshwater use. The boat was ran hard so I assume thats how it got broken.

I am surprised he does not have an SBI catalog. Every other machine shop I know of uses their valves, guides, seats etc.
