Oil is like blood. A little looks like a ton when it is spilled. The drive isn't going to push the oil out of itself.

actually the pressure will make gear oil rise and come out. The cap is a one valve that keeps pressure in and gear oil not rising.

Anyways it is best to put the drive level unscrew the vent plug in the outdrive and stick a clear tie wrap thru the hole a very slight downward angle - pull out to see if gear oil is on the tie wrap --- Next is make a L out of the tie wrap and put back in the vent hole facing down ward then pull back out to see where the gear oil is on the tie wrap. This will determine how low your gear became in the outdrive. KEEP IN MIND A PROPERLY FILLED OUTDRIVE is the gear oil will be level and or come out of the vent hole when unscrewed.

WHAT A SECOND HERE. I never said how to FILL THE OUTDRIVE PERIOD , I AM EXPLAINING your situation of losing gear oil because your cap was not on the reservoir. MY POST was explaining about checking HOW LOW IT BECAME IN THE OUTDRIVE (the gear oil ).

U always fill from the bottom up - Have to ask how did read into that I said about filling the gear oil Never mentioned one word about filling the drive with gear oil I did mention how to check it since you dumped a chit load of gear oil out. Again the drive reservoir cap is a one way valve style to keep the pressure and gear oil from not rising.

AGAIN my post was explaining to check how low your gear oil became in the outdrive since you dump a bunch out from yours words that you posted.
