Fuel line removal tool?
folks, my my boat is 3 hours away and not running right. I'm planning to test fuel pressure and clean filters of the fuel pumps etc. I just got the service manual for my 2003 gen 2 cool fuel system. The manual references a fuel line to fuel rail removal tool. What is this tool and where can I get one? Kevin |
Google fuel line removal tool. There are lots of different kinds, but they pretty much all do the same thing.
|
I already googled it. Unfortunately the boat is 3 hours away so I can't look at it to see what type of lines are on the boat. I am trying to have all the tools I need with me. Does anyone know the tool required for a 2003 496 Mag? It's a gen 2 cool fuel system if that matters. Kevin |
Always best to provide serial number
BUP is the guy to ask, or another which has removed, but it says to find locally so my assumption would be the regular auto type. I don't have the master kit but just have the white things on top and they have worked fine when needed https://www.autozone.com/test-scan-a...set/291413_0_0 |

Yep, Autozone might rent one also. The female fuel line has little fingers, similar to a chinese finger trap. These lock onto the male barb of the fuel rail inlet. The tool slides over fuel rail and pushes into the female hose and unlocks the fingers.
Tip.... before disconnecting fuel line from rail, bleed pressure from schrader valve on fuel rail near the coolant expansion tank. Place a few rags under valve when doing this. Same for fuel hose to rail. |
Serial number 0M383059 |
Thanks, you have first gen 496 so it doesn't have the boost pump.
|
That is interesting. I thought there were still 2 pumps. It was my understanding that there is a booster pump above the fiuel separator and a high pressure pump on the opposite side. Cool fuel gen 2 |
Your '03 will have the boost pump mounted by the spin on fuel filter and raw water pump.
|
OK so it has 2 fuel pumps then? a booster and a high pressure pump? Do both pumps have filter screens in them somewhere?

Cool fuel gen 2 I was using BAM's site an serial number range at their site does not list the boost pump, list only "fuel pump and cooler". This is not to say it was not installed later by the dealer or other. The boost pump was advertised to help stop vapor lock. Genuine Mercury & Mercruiser parts. 496 MAG (Base Model) - 0M025000 THRU 0M687082 There is no listing for a boost pump. Its not unheard of any year boat to have a 1 year older motor Now if we look at the next serial number range 0M687083 THRU 0W059999 you will see a listing for "fuel filter and boost pump" and Gen 2 pump is listed as "cool fuel" When in doubt get a hold of BUP Genuine Mercury & Mercruiser parts. 496 MAG (Base Model) - 0M687083 THRU 0W059999 |

Too funny and for the record - yes many auto stores has the removal tool and for the record Merc lists it as a Kent Moore 3/8 fuel line disconnect tool J- 41769-1 just an fyi as well. Some of the plastic tools are cheap - some of them I do not like. But of course I use it alot more than a boat owner would. |
That reminds me I did not need any special tools to remove the fuel line. I did buy the kit of all different types so now I'm looking for a project to use them on.
