2000 Baja fuel question
I got a 2000 Baja 232 with a mild built 502. Saturday I went out topped off fuel (10 gallons). Fired boat and she did fine. I was cruising @ 50 and it started losing power and bucking (like water in fuel). It starts and idles fine. At the end of the day we headed back and at full throttle it would not get passed 20mph. Then it would get full power then back to less power it did this several time until it felt like whatever was in the fuel it worked it’s way out and the rest of the trip back she ran as normal. I use fuel stabilizer every year before Storage. Fuel pump is new. I was thinking maybe an injector got clogged. Could I use some bg 44k fuel cleaner? I guess I would need 3 bottles since I have 74 gallon tank. Does anyone have idea or had this happen to them? Thanks for reading. |
Pull the water separator and dump it into a clear glass jar.. let it sit for a while and see what happens.
If there is water in there you will see a distinct line when they settle |
Ahh good idea! Thanks |
I don't really like fuel additives. In my experience it takes whatever is on the bottom of that tank and sends it through your injectors. If you are concerned about them, pull them off and have BUP test them.

Ok. Thanks guys |
Update
So I Swapped our the fuel water separator. I took the boat out 2 days and drove it around. It’s starts and idles no problem. At small increments of throttle it stays normal at middle throttle it run as if there is something in the fuel cuts in full power then cuts out again. I ran it all day Sat and Sunday. My next thought is pulling the pump out and looking to see if the filter is clogged. Any other suggestions? |
What did the fuel from the fuel seperator/filter look like?

Put a pressure gauge or the fuel rail shrader fitting
|
I put it a cup and looked fine to me. I’ll check the fuel pressure and report back. |

Try new plugs before you start pulling other parts. Easy enough to do in case you have fouling issues. I just went through similar issue.

I’d give it the full Monty of a tune up before you start chasing ghost. It could be plugs, plug wires, filters, voodoo curse from an ex wife etc. Start with the cheap simple stuff that should be done anyways. |
The pump was replaced 2 years ago and it has a screen on it. |
Carb or MPI?
For MPI If it has a VST you'll want to dig into it as the electric pump pickup is probably plugged up with gunk. Mine was at 250 hrs. Also check the check valves at your fuel tank, they plug up too as well as the 90* at the mechanical lift pump. |
I pulled the pump which is new. Looked pretty clean. I cleaned it all out and ran it over the weekend. If you go full throttle it falls on its face but if I gradually increase throttle it will run better. Still does there is an issue. I will check the lines and see if they are clogged. Just FYI boat only has 250 hours on it. Motor has about 5 hours. |

Just a slight elbowing: Why people love to replace several or more parts and stay up all night wondering what is wrong with their engine, yet fail to buy a few low dollar tools always amazes me. Fuel psi testers are under $40, even locally. Report backwith psi at idle, low speed, and when the issue occurs. Try tonot runmotormuch even when testing. Lean can burn a piston or blow a headgasket and notch a head pretty quick. :( |
I am ahead of you thanks keep searching and suggestions are a good opportunity to think of something your nothttps://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...baccf913d.jpeg |
