bravo drive water pick up question

I have a bravo 1 drive (90's) with a sea pump belt driven on the motor my understanding that there is no impeller internally on bravo drives. Currently the water pick up is thru the hull and not threw the drive itself. what is the benefit to this if any? im currently replacing the transom and just wondering if i should go back to the drive pickup or keep the thru hull one? or could i have a "T" with a 3 way ball valve for switching it? i did have problems of seaweed pluggin the tube at times i would have to jump in water to pull it out. pain in ass so i made a screen for it works better but once and awhile i'll pick some up and usually going in reverse gets rid of it.

Hello; The Bravo 3s are notorious for a neck-down of the water passage thru the transom. I just got thru putting thru hull pickups form my twin 496 MAGs ( Chaparral Signature 350) and blocked of the water passage thru the transom. If and when this is done they say you have to disconnect the hose from the Bravo drive to the outside transom. This allows dynamic water pressure to flow water thru the Bravo Low End and out the Bravo Top End to cool the gears.
I used Forespar Marelon T-150 Raw Water Strainer and high quality thru hull scoops and valves. The old water hose intakes from the transom are plugged.

Good Luck
Vince

Thru hull is better then thru the drive IMO

If it was mine I would keep it that way. Now if the hose coming from the drive to the transom plate is still connected and has not been at least cut off as vpelliccia mentioned (probably has), then I would do that. If your in salt water I would suggest installing a sea strainer
