Merc 525efi
new to the forum 😏
I know there is a lot of knowlegde regarding the merc 525efi in here, so I hope someone can answer my questions. I have tried to ask both Hardin marine, Teage and whipple directly to no satisfaction so far. Case is, I'm repowering a light 24 foot double stepped v-hull with a merc 525 with zero hours on it 😎. Since I'm at it, I realy wanna go for the Whipple stage1 kit. Yes, I know there's realy no need for the extra hp this will add, and yes I know my XR drive will die at some point! Question is this: I will change the head gaskets to Cometic, and upgrade the studs, will it be smart to change to fully forged pistons at the same time? Or is that a waste of money? Will the extra punch from the BB blow my silent choice to pieces or can I keep it? If it is adviceable to skip the silent choice, what kind of inline silencers/mufflers will people recomend? I do want my exhaust to be flushed with the hull, so no outside muffler tips.... thankfull for any input 👍 |
Later 525s already have cometic head gaskets and I'm pretty sure they all have forged pistons. Silent choice is only safe to run in quiet mode at low rpms and I only use mine at idle.

Thank you. My engine do not have the cometic gaskets, thats why I'm switching..... also change to Arp bolts. Off course I only run low rpm's when switched in silent mode 🙄, but have no first hand knowlegde of anybody running BBC with sc and silent choice thats wy I asked. Roumors have it the pistons is only "semi-forged",but if this is no issue I dont bother changing...😏 |
For what i hear, its better to drive the 525 efi not with silent choice!!!
They have a sharp cam and get fast Reversion. This most when engine runs at idle!! Michael |
Forged pistons in a 525.
