Merc 2 trans question

I am building new motors for my 77 28ss. It currently has 350's with a 2 piece rms and Merc2 transmissions. My question is can I use a newer 1 piece rms motor and still be able to attach the coupler for the Merc trans? I know there are some differences in the two flywheels that were used. Thanks Jim.

I believe there is a pilot bushing in the end of the crank. The tranny needs that pilot or you will take out the pump. Others may know this in more detail.

Yes, definitely want to be sure you have the pilot bushing in the end of the crank to support the tranny input shaft. The MercTrans drive plate should bolt right up to the flywheel, as long as you have the right flywheel, the manual shift style.

Sounds great, Thanks

If you haven't removed pilot bearings yet an easy way to remove is pack with grease in behind them until it pushes your grease gun out and then take a dowel and drive it in. Seems like hitch pin was perfect OD if I remember right. It will force them right out. You may already know but just in case. Not sure if you were reusing or buying new. The ones I removed in were great shape.

The bushing in these don't actually wear any beings all the pieces involved here turn together all the time.

no they don't wear, but a 1-piece chevy smallblock has a chebby sized clutch pilot or none. the merctrans is a ford size .61-something. you can get big block ones from BAM and guys like that. or get a chebby bushing and get it bored out to correct size.
