Wiring neutral safety switch
I have trs drives, zero effort shifters. I also have kill switches.
Starting from scratch so advice needed and appreciated. Do I do this? Fuse panel->neutral safety->kill switch->starter ?? |
No. Neutral safety switch goes in the wire from the key (yelo/red) that goes to the slave solenoid to crank the starter. Kill switch goes in the wire from the key (Purple) that goes to the ignition system.
KEY Yelo/Red Wire>>>>>>> Neutral Safety Switch>>>>>>Slave Solenoid KEY Purple Wire>>>>>>>>Kill Switch>>>>>>>>>>Ignition system If you have the MercTrans transmissions they have a Neutral Safety Switch mounted on the shift linkage on them factory. Don't know if yours are still there or wired in.....if you have those trannys. |

Well if their still on the trannys I would check if their still wired in and see if they could possibly be used. If they don't work then I would just go with the ones on the shifters. I doubt you could ever find those switches new anywhere. I may have some used ones. Mercury stopped using these trannys in the early 80's.
Just a FYI...if your winterizing make sure you disconnect the 2... 3/8" hoses connected to the cooler in the trans on the starboard side. If you don't and it freezes it will split the cooler inside the trans. |
I have the wiring diagram to that neutral safety switch and the way it works is it disables the slave solenoid by disconnecting the ground to it. When you find the switch on the tranny shift linkage it should have 2 wires coming off it. One wire goes to ground. The other wire goes to the negative terminal on the slave solenoid.
