Need some help identifying which 7.4 I have

I recently purchased a 98 Baja 24 Outlaw with a 7.4. I went to marineengine.com to look up some info on the the 7.4. The website lists a 7.4 TBI, a 454 Mag, and a 454 Mag MPFI with the serial number range that matches my engine, but I don’t believe the engine in my boat is any of them. My engine is a 7.4 carbureted motor that appears to be the base 7.4, but I am a little confused since that combo isn’t listed on marinerngine.com as an option. My SN is K283301. Thanks!

Serial# is not correct/working.

When you get it correct, you can plug it into here:

Go to Mercury's online parts and enter you serial number .

I put the SN in the Mercury Marine site and it says that it’s a Gen V 454 Mag. The spark arrestor cover says 7.4 ThunderVolt Ignition and I read online while I was searching that the 454 Mag was labeled as such and the non Mag motors were labeled as 7.4’s, is that correct?

I went out and got the casting number off the block and it is for sure a Gen VI motor. The marineengine.com site lists the 454 Mag as being the only engine available with a carb for 96-97 model years. Is there a way to tell a Mag from a standard 7.4 externally? Thanks

Check the intake with a magnet for starters. Cast (magnet will stick) it’s not a mag. Aluminumis a mag. Also pull valve cover and check head casting. That will tell you what heads and definitely tell you if it’s a mag or not

I did check the intake and it’s cast iron so that sounds like a strike against it being a Mag. Did they make a carburetored version of the base 7.4 that’s just not listed on the marineengine.com site? That would make the most sense since the engine is labeled as a 7.4 and not a 454 Mag.

If it’s cast it’s a non mag. Almost certainly.

0K283301 = 1997 MERCRUISER TB5, W/PS, TWOPCEX, WORO, GEN-6 7.4L BRAVO Model Number 474B110KS...So it shouldn't be a Mag from new.

GM V8 454 cid Gen VI with Roller Lifters. Sterndrive, Ski and Inboard Models (4 bolt mains, LH rotation). 7.4L (carb) XW 1996-1997, 6WX start of Gen VI, Bravo. 14 (356)

Do you have a bravo 1 or 3 stern drive as some of the 3's had a high rise intake but mostly Gen 5's are mentioned in the I'd link above.
