What is the typical water temp you run in? Without a thermostat it may take a while to warm up the oil. I run a smaller cooler with about the same HP, but I run in Northern Lake Huron where water temps don't get above 78 and can be as cold as 34. My oil does get to 280-290 when I'm running hard. When I'm idling down the river my oil drops to 130-150 when the water is warm. I run Amsoil 15w-50 racing oil which handles the heat real well so no issues so far.

I’ve talked to the techs at Amsoil and they said for the racing oil I’m running it’s no problem. They told me I’m good even at 350. I’ve scoped out the engine and no varnish buildup from running the oil to hot. Engine still looks brand new inside even after 100 hrs since the rebuild. Oil comes out at the end of the season clean as a whistle. As a matter of fact I use the old oil as bar oil in my chainsaw. That’s a story for another forum. |
I reversed my cooler lines to see what effect it would have and there was no change. Personal experience only so may be different in your boat. Oil temps are 230-235 wide open at the pan with a cooler your size on a closed cooled 540. 200-210 at fast cruise but I boat in Florida and the water is piss hot here. |
