I had the 4”x5” sport on my 500hp with no loss in power. I can’t say what’s different about the competition version. Maybe when you start getting into real power it makes a difference. Apparently they’re still effective with dry pipes. |
Is everyone with GGB’s happy with the sound? I put some in tips and ran it on the hose and I didn’t think it sounded too hot. The boat hasn’t been in the water yet though. |
I had ggb clampons on.my 272 Baja, ran 99.5 gps with them off and about 99.2 w them on in back to back testing. One fell off in 100 feet of water at 80 mph, ggb was closed at that time indefinately. Bought a set of terribly restrictrive looking gibson clampons, the cheapest thing in market. Took boat out and it ran in the low 99s, i couldnt hardly believe it. I since returned baja to a milder version, sold it and bought bigger boat. Had those gibsons laying around here. Started using them on my dyno dry, typically they knock off 20 ft lbs tq and 10 or 15 hp on a 600 to 800 hp motor fwiw vs not running them.

I noticed a deep tone with a less raspy note myself. My gf envies the ski boats that are whisper quiet (Re: boring) so I tried some clamp on mufflers and they muffled everything. I sold those and got extra long tips and the 12” GGB inserts and will cut off the rings until I get the sound that I like. I do run a 272 Islander and do a lot of wakeboarding and tubing so I do need to hear People in the water at idle. I’m a huge fan of the GGB inserts myself as I feel they don’t neuter the muscle sound like mufflers do. |
