454-496 stroker help!
Hey guys new to the Forum! I have an 87 Formula 242ls that I recently picked up a 454 MAG MPI (380hp I believe) and a bravo1 drive for a great deal. I did a lot of reading on power upgrades for this engine and it seams like I’m pretty limited, I am leaning towards removing the fuel injection, bore and stroking to a 496, using the stock heads, valvetrain, exhaust and then buying an intake. My friend has an 850cc carb that he’s willing to give me. My marina currently has 93 octane fuel so I’m not limited there. My question is what recommendations and problems could I run into? Has anyone done a similar build that could give their input? What type of power do you think I would see? The original motor was a 454 (330hp) and it was fun but looking to get allitle more out of it ecspecialy with the engine already out and on a stand. Thanks in advance! |
To get any real benefit, you need to do cam/valve train and exhaust. Without those its a waste of time and money to stroke it.

Any recommendations for a cam? I’m definitely open to changing it out but I’ve been reading allot about reversion. I want to avoid goin with too big of a stick and finding out after the motors back in the boat. Marine motors are new to me and I’ve looked into diffrent exhausts but they seam to come with a heavy price tag. Any input on a good exhaust that won’t break the bank? |
search button, there are 435489175 threads on 454 builds. how much are you trying to get out of it??? how much do you want to spend?

What Griff said is spot on. Boats are not as rewarding as cars on upgrades. Takes a lot more power increase in a boat to see performance increase as opposed to a car. You can go mild upgrades to make it sound good, but don't expect huge speed increase. You sure you want to ditch the fuel injection? I agree the sound of a carbureted engine with a high lift cam is great, but turn key drivability of fuel injection is nice when you are loading and docking. Yes marine exhaust is expensive but you got to have it if you want increase in power,

I would use a RPM air gap dual plane intake, call comp cams tell them your combo, let them grind a cam that will give you max power @5500-5700. The 850 might be a tad large but will work, a 750 would be better, that package will work fine.

and dont buy a cheap cast crank stroker kit...
