Formula 271 build
Hello there , first post on offshore only what a great site. , I'm up in Vancouver Canada and theres not a lot of go fast boat guys up here.
I'm upgrading my 2001 271 fastech , and was going to add some 22 " mayfair tabs to combat chine walk. From what Iv e read it sounds like water level mount is the way to go but position is still a guess for me. Or i was thinking maybe angled mount 1" up from transome water edge. Again not sure , tabs are long and pointed so I donr want to drag. my build ...approx 850 hp .540 ci bbc, alum heads all the best internals , 871 blower twin efi throttle body , hurricane big tube headers, built bravo xr upper and imco sc lower. Twin ram mayfair stearing. Any insite would be much appreciated Seann |
There have been many discussions about this through the years. Try the search bar to access the tread you need. Best of luck. That boat must be a hand full at 90. |
I have a 2000 Fastech 271 . I installed Mercury 280 tabs in line with the edge of the hull 3/4 of an inch up from the bottom. That is the way the Mercury instructions wanted them mounted. I have 713 hp and once the boat tops 78 on GPS it starts chine walking and gets bad enough over low 80s that you have to get out of the throttle. The tabs don't really help at that point. The bottom of the hull is far from anywhere near perfect. The tabs are great but if you want to go really fast save your money and have the bottom blueprinted or get a better hull.. Jeff wurl

If you don’t have it already, you really need hydraulic steering. I’ll bet that’ll do more for the chine walking than anything else. |
I believe he said he has dual ram Mayfair,Tom. I think he needs to put that beast of a motor in a single screw 292 fastek. He might get the stick all the way down in that. |
Sorry I missed that. Heavily medicated trying to get over the flu. Agreed though... that’s a lot of motor for a 271! |
