Top mount starter jamming.

I purchaced a rebuilt 572 gm talldeck motor with top mount trs starter. Tried cranking the motor( not yet in boat) and the starter is jamming against the flywheel. Swapped starters and bellhousings same result. I did not count teeth will do that in the morning. Is it the wrong flywheel or am i forgetting a step.
thanks chris

Flywheel. The teeth are on opposite side. At least you didn't get it in the boat. You'll likely need a neutrally balance one also. What did the flywheel come off from?

I sold an engine with flywheel and didn't realize it was going in a block mount bravo app and the buyer ran into same problem after engine install. That was an oh shxt moment when I got that call. If you have the correct flywheel for the engine you can pull the fly wheel and flip the ring gear to opposite side. Torch and or conventional oven comes in handy.

Flywheel is 168 tooth. It engages but jams https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0ee5170959.jpg.

I have tried 2 different bellhousings and 4 starters same result. Can i use this fly wheel off a 454 mag?

why is there a washer in between the starter and bellhousing, looks like its sitting at an angle, starter should flush mount to the bell.

Craney 02-24-2019 10:18 AM

It might be the way I’m looking at it but it looks like the starter is not engaging the fly wheel all the way.

i also tried shimming it out with one then 2 washers same result as being flush.

I see the same thing. I agree with you

Check run out on the flywheel

How strong is your BATTERY and that POWER ? Correct size battery here spinning over the engine ? 12.75 / 12.8 volts is fully charged and USE a cranking battery not a deep cycle battery. All marine manu strongly recommend a cranking battery NOT a deep cycle battery for engine starting and running the engine side. I would use a quality 1000 MCA cranking battery.

And not a walmart nor a O reilly nor a costco batteries period and IMO blue top OPTI s are junk to.

Ive seen this before when the engine isn't started, pull the plugs and crank the engine a couple rotations and see if it disengages ? if not rotate the crank clock wise with a break over bar just a bit and see if it disengages.

Dumbass me was using jumper cables that were not up to it. Ran some heavy cable to the battery to starter problem solved.
thanks for all the responses!
Chris

Hopefully some of that info helped and a Volt meter - and Voltage DROP testing when you hit the starter. Had a feeling it was something to do with POWER / Voltage not spinning over the engine hard enough. Just saying.
