Slow starter - BBC

i recently rebuilt my engine with higher compression and now need to address the slow crank issue.

Have any of you worked on this and have a recommendation to solve it? Shorter, thicker cables? Gear reduced marine starter (is one avail?)

thank you

I'm having the same issue, looking forward to the replies.

Bad starter or battery or bad cable or connection not to be funny you need to go in there with volt meter.

sandslot 05-01-2019 08:45 AM

Ok, so if the starter and battery are production and 100%, it should turn over a production Mercruiser as well as a 10:1 Mercruiser? I say this because both starter and battery worked well with the standard Mercruiser

Agreed.

OP look up how to do a voltage drop test. Perform it with the ignition coil disabled.

Put a meter on each cable se what voltage loss you have. Standard starter should work. You can try adding pos cable direct to battery. Double check all ground cables

Thanks for the feedback.... sounds like a standard starter will work. I am replacing both positive and negative cables with 1 AWG gauge copper wire. Will report back

Price out the difference doing it 1/0 solder the ends and make sure you have a good battery switch. Spend the extra money find good tinned cable look on eBay.

sutphen 30 05-01-2019 09:16 PM

are you using a gm mini starter?those starters will spin over most anything.

sandslot 05-02-2019 04:50 AM

Yes, I am using your gym starter. I appreciate the comments above regarding the cable as well. I will pick some up and solder the ends and minimize the links overall. I’ll report back

sutphen 30 05-02-2019 06:02 AM

is the starter painted, especially the mounting pad?and the block?may be a bad ground.you using starter mounting bolts w/ the knurls on them?

sandslot 05-02-2019 06:13 AM

I do have the correct starter bolts, but will verify good contact.... great suggestion!

TomZ 05-02-2019 08:52 AM

Make sure it’s shimmed properly, too.

Ryan, I installed the shortest and thickest cable I could find (size 1ot) and it’s full of spunk now. I had the ends wedged/crimped on at the local battery store

good luck

SABER28 05-05-2019 09:37 PM

dont buy MSD starters , this is the result. yes they were shimmed correctly.

That ring gear looks funny with the teeth like it was to hard. What's the motor combo?

14 apache 05-05-2019 10:07 PM

Have not seen a starter knock teeth off like that for no reason. Something other than the starter did that.

SABER28 05-06-2019 07:01 AM

557 cid, 650 hp, 9.3 compression. starter bendix's half the time wouldnt come out all the way, buzzing the ring gear. put the exact ring gear back on and used some new tilton super starters and havent had a problem since. MSD told me they had problems with them, then when they found out i wanted labor time to pull 2 boat engines they lied and said they never had problems with them. then after six months of avoiding me the best they could they agreed to pay 2K for the repairs. which they reneged on 24 hours later. keep in mind this ruined my once a year boating vacation and knocked out over half my summers boating. took ten years to save and build these engines. MSD products are crap. btw at least summit stepped up and refunded the starters that MSD still had in their possession. screw their ignitions too, been using daytona cd-1 boxes, they are great.

Thanks! - Did you do the (+) from the battery to starter? Or other cables also?

tbanzer 05-09-2019 08:24 PM

Chased a similar problem for a whole season ended up being bad battery selector switch.

14 apache 05-09-2019 08:45 PM

how where these ring gears put on did a shop do them??

Nothing personel 353 05-09-2019 09:33 PM

You get a bum starter once in a while? Buy new not rebuilt worth a shot? Good luck

they were put on welded and balanced by
Performance Engineering in jenison michigan.

the telling thing is one and only change from MSD to Tilton solved the problem. and the fact that MSD told me they were having problems.

14 apache 05-09-2019 10:15 PM

Well there was two things changed starter and ring gear. By the looks of the broken teeth the ring gear was overheated or possibly defective. Not saying there was no other problem with the starter but the teeth sheared of past engagement and the metal looks like cast on how it broke. Just looking at it from another angle.

its possible, i did use the same brand ring gears to replace the wrecked ones, however. the starters would buzz the flywheels about 50% of the time and not engage the gear. but again MSD admitted they had problems. it did surprise the crap out of me when i seen them. left my vacation to go to back to my shop thinking i was just gone to replace a starter.
