since we'ren another "oil" thread... I used to run 50 (synth) on my blown 454. I now have twin 502s, stock. Can I still use the 50 weight 20-50 to be exact or do I need to run a 40 now...

There has been some good information here.

As I posted, I use the HP4 Fram and have had very good luck. I know at least five other boaters using the same.

However, I have been considering going with the Billet Marine unit with the replaceable element.

The only down side I see is the up front cost. They look cool, would make changing the oil a cleaner job and have a magnet in the cap to pick up metallic particals in the oil.

Have any of you used these? I would like to hear some pros and cons before dishing out the cash.

Thanks Mark

Many German cars have been using this type of filter for years.

The initial cost is higher but the replacement filters are less money and help the environment. (You don't have to throw away a tin can with oil inside every few months).

I am not familiar with the kit that you are referring to for boats.

Steve,
I think this is what he was referring to:

The billet marine units look really nice - especially with a thermostat build in - but....

My filter hangs down from the mount. Therefore unscrewing the cover would be REALLY messy. (Maybe they come with a new mount)

Rick - it might be a nice add on for you. Don't your filters screw in on the bottom for the 496?

At $200 per filter I would just buy some filter mags for a few bucks and save the rest for fuel!

Steve,
Yes the threaded end of the filter is on bottom.
I agree for $200 that will buy me 18 yrs worth of Merc filters at my current usage rate. I think I will pass and as you suggest put it in the gas tank. Now that will last about a weekend or two.

Rick
