Pulling mercruiser bbc?

hi,

i was getting started on the project boat today and pulled the bravo 2 off. I was going to get started on pulling the engine and just wanted to see if it was as easy as it looks. It would appear that there are two bolts to the transom unit and the two engine mounts? There are some assorted hoses, throttle and shift cables, but not much electrical as it’s never run in this boat. I can deal with the assorted stuff, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything big.

There is a small unit connected off to the side, power steering unit? I guess I can’t post pictures yet.

Thanks
jason

Generally it's...

2 power steering lines to the rack
2 rear motor mount bolts
front motor mounts
exhaust
1 throttle cable
2 shift cables...control cable and intermediate cable
water hose from transom to water pump
fuel line
power to starter
ground usually to bell housing stud towards the top and one on the other side that connects to transom assembly
1 main round engine harness
trim sender and limit switch wires should be up top towards the rear of the intake...they have bullet type plugs so DON'T cut them!!
depending on configuration outdrive bottle hose and wires but generally those are on the engine with the bottle

Those should be the big ticket items connecting it to the boat

When you clean the bilge afterwards and find the 2 large fiber washers and some funny looking lock-washers (Merc calls them springs), save them. They are needed at the rear mount when you re-install the eng.

Yes, it's that easy.

Bigtalljv 05-04-2019 06:02 PM

Thanks guys!

Looks like somebody already cut the bullet connectors off the trim switches. It’s the trim pump I was looking at, no power steering. One forward engine mount is a solid mass of rust, looks like I can remove it from the bracket to the stringer easier. Remote oil filter and oil cooler has some crazy stupid mounting bracket, took an hour to get those bolts off. Looks like I’m ready to hoist, just need to figure out how to get the engine 10 feet up!

Thanks
jason

Truck crane, backhoe. overhead crane or big tree. Good luck.

Bigtalljv 05-05-2019 03:10 PM

Yeah, I don’t have any of those. :-(

is pulling an engine a common thing for people? I might have to dig up a gantry if I’m going to do this more than once.

Gantry crane is the way to go if your going to pull them often.

unfortunately with my boat I can do it with my eyes closed lol...I have been a boat mechanic for a long time as well so pulling motors is pretty routine in my world haha

It’s no big deal really. Just remember you have to lift the entire thing over the side of the boat. So if you’re pulling it in a building you need a high clearance. What BBWTSGGhHYy said.

My experience is to budget about 5X what you told your wife what you “expected” to spend. Next, get a partner that works cheap.

I’m the cheap labor. I’m a car guy so pulling engines is no big thing, where they are close to the ground. The carb’d BBC is pretty dirt simple, just a few more hoses. Those I’m going to have to re-route, not crazy about the way they had them run and mounted. Less worried about the wrenching, more worried about how I’m going to get it out. Been searching Craigslist for a gantry but nothing yet. I’m not sure the harbor freight ones are tall enough. Side of the boat is 5-6’ on the trailer. The HF one would probably work but that’s like the most expensive thing there, hard to spend they kind of money on HF quality.

BBYSTWY 05-05-2019 05:33 PM

It's always nice to have your own stuff...but...could you rent a forklift from an equipment rental place for a couple hours? Might be a little bit of a pain but might be cheaper in the long run? or if you are in a barn/garage maybe a beam across a few rafters with a chainfall/hoist? FYI I found my A-frame gantry at a farm auction for like 50 bucks..it was a b!tch to move but it's stout as hell!!

A tree also works. I pulled my first ones using a tree. I know people that have called their local tow company and the were charged about $100

Now I have a fork truck.

Depending on the boat the HF won't clear the sides. The engine is down in there usually farther than you think.

You guys are killing me. All things I have dreamed of owning and have shopped for.

No no trees that big on my property
dreamed of a barn/workshop for 10 years (got kids going to college instead)
gone to auctions for closed auto shops and never had the money to win.

I have have a friend who has all the toys, forklift, tractor, hoist in the garage, but that this rate I might as well buy a brewery for all the beer I owe him. Also he’s crazy busy so maneuvering the boat through the shop is a challenge.

If you have the space to store this will be a life long friend for any boat owner.

as long as you have a 7’ beam. :(

Craney 05-05-2019 10:56 PM

You can make a better one for less then $750.00.

Bigtalljv 05-05-2019 11:05 PM

I was just talking to a buddy about that....

Bigtalljv 05-12-2019 08:03 PM

Well a couple hours of driving and I got somebody else’s yard art.

Yeah sorry. I’m not working on a fast boat. The one next to it is faster. 7m ex-military RIB with a 250 outboard. Will do 50 (I know that’s still not fast to you all)

Well the new A-frame worked great. Engine is out, that was easy enough. The engine looks really good, I guess the seller was actually honest.

I meed to pull the clutch and bell housing off to get it on the stand. Anything I need to be careful of doing that.

Whats a good manual for assembly and disassembly? I’ve seen plenty of links to mercruiser manuals in PDF, do I just need to find the right one?

liberator221 05-17-2019 01:58 PM

Clutch?? I think you just have a bell housing, coupler, and flywheel.

your are correct. I’m a car guy so still leaning proper terminology. Bell housing popped off with just a couple bolts. Looks like the flywheel sat in some water for a while. Anything to be concerned of? Oil looks good, the dipstick is fresh clear oil. So far the previous owner was accurate about everything, the engine looks pretty clean. Said it was a fresh water engine with 200 hours.
