No throttle response
 
Hey guys.

I bought a junkyard marine SBC 350 and after mounting a Holley 600 carb I have no sort of throttle response the engine almost cuts if I rev off idle you can see it in the video linked below. It's just a project I wanted to do to learn about these engines which are pretty rare down here in the Caribbean and I can't seem to figure this one out. I have checked the accelerator pump and it works but I may need to check the .015 clearance it requires at WOT. I sort of hooked up the vacuum advance (not sure if it's right) on the distributor and the wires running to the HEI plug on the distributor cap are tight i pulled off the cover and made sure the contacts were not pushed up. Any ideas ? Maybe it's too lean ?

Is the timing set?? It sounds like crap and sounds like a valve is not opening or has a dead cylinder.

Sorry, but that looks like your all the way around in the wrong arena. To me that looks like a automotive carb and distributor, so in a boat your making a bomb, and I have to pass

No problem but this is how the engine came ! The distributor is a Delco Remy marine distributor and I'm not sure if you realized but the engine is not in a boat and I plan to put it in a car someday. I am using what I have there aren't V8 parts just laying around here in the Caribbean .

Give me a year and I can tell you what the timing was set at for a Merc of that year

Most pre-vortec merc 260hp motors had 8 initial and 30 total.

Lazy neutral revs wanting to intake backfire is usually 1 or more of following and in typical order of what I see for this condition:

Initial timing wrong
Crap in a carburetor passage
Vacuum leak
ignition issue - caap.rotor. wires/ plugs. This includes wires on wrong plugs
Too lean accelerator pump shot
Valves not seating well
Broken valvespring

edit in: watched vid again. You have exhaust water pouring on the ignition wires.

A marine OEM Holley will have J vent tubes.

I never messed with timing so it's either correct or original owner screwed up !
Carb Passage is clear check that
Will need to check this
Will check If I have a dead cylinder but I know for sure the firing order is right and the rotor is set correctly
accelerator pump is fine tested that
can't answer the last two not that deep into it yet
