632 CI BBC engine help
Working to get my two 632 ci engines running.
MSD mechanical distributor #83606. instructions say it's set at 21 degrees stop bushings so if I set initial timing at 10 degrees i'm only getting 31 degrees total advance on the internet i'm reading I should have 36 to 38 degrees total timing? so i'll start with this simple question what do you all recommend as max advance on a BBC 632 Ci engine with 1050 dominator carb? what do you recommend for an initial advance and how do I set that. From way back when I remember you would run the engine at around 800 RPM and use a timing light and set it at around 10 degrees? i'm assuming the more important reading is at max advance where you would have full power. what should I shoot for there? thank you in advance for your help. I always ran my MSD equipped engines with locked timing and a 20deg start retard box. On the Dyno, both engines like 34 degrees, making my initial timing 14. If you have a 21 deg advance curve and set all in for 36, your initial is 15deg. |
This is a recommendation from blue print engines where I got the short block so I guess that's what i'll do.
You'll want to change the following in that distributor. - Change the springs to 1 light blue and 1 heavy silver to bring your timing curve all in at 3500 rpms -Change the factory blue bushing out to a purple or black to limit your timing to only 18 or 19 degrees. That way when you set total mechanical timing at the 3500 rpms to 34 degrees you should have 15 or 16 degree initial which these 632s generally like. Make sure you are using Champion 792 plugs gaped to .035" |
If you've got to look on the internet for how to set the timing, you really should have somebody with more knowledge set it up.
If you do it wrong, you are risking a blown engine. |
News flash ... this is the internet. I’ve asked a bunch of questions here. |
compression, squish clearance, combustion chamber shape/design, fuel octane used.etc , andesecially what the engineends uwanting ), will determine what timing secswillbe wanted. That said, count on 32-35*total and somewhere between 12 to 20 or more for initial. :)
