In the market for roller lifters..
I'm looking into options for hyd roller lifters...what's everyone using?
cam... 278/288 .612/.618 lift 114 lobe separation 5500ish rpm...don't plan to spin it any harder than that I do need the tiebar lifters so let's talk specifically about those please Reason I'm looking long story short is I'm getting a tick in my freshly rebuilt motor and I think I have it narrowed down to a lifter either failing or just wore out not sure. They are comps that are in it and I think it's time to upgrade to something better. |
Did you try adjusting the one that is ticking?? If its a fresh rebuild, one could need another 1/4 turn

Yes I have and it will go away slightly for a bit then it will come back...I've ran the engine about an hour now total and up to about 2500 RPM....kinda nervous to go more than that with the lifter/rocker ticking
What I think is happening is after I adjust the rockers it will run great no tick then I believe one of the lifters is collapsing causing the rocker to become loose and starting ticking/rattling At this point I'm thinking of just putting new lifters in and know that's not my issue....I will admit these lifters I bought used but was told they hardly any run time and the engine builder looked them over and said there was no reason to buy new as these looked fine....well here I am now kicking myself for not buying new. Plus I've read that these comps are not great anyway and its making me a little leary to run them regardless |
I had the exact issue with a set of Comp 854 lifters. I chased it to the point of having a valve hang open when it would decided to build a little pressure. I ended up replacing two pairs (they were new). Not sure on what to recommend as a replacement. The ones everyone raves about a couple years ago are now pretty questionable. For me any future builds will be based on Gen VI blocks and GM hardware. Seems to be a lot less hassle and less chance of a valvetrain failure. |
That's what I've been seeing that's why I started this...was going to get morels but saw numerous reports saying they are junk but also numerous reports of them being great....same with isky
Seems like comp went to hell in like 2012 or so from what I've read....I know all parts can fail but I guess I'm looking for the best percentage of success stories hahaha |
I have used the Comp cams short travel race lifters in the last 4 engines that I have built and have been very happy with them. All of them had considerably more camshaft in them than what you are running.

Yea I'm pretty sure they hosed me on the cam...just started a separate thread about that lol
From what I saw comps seem to be the most economical choice...maybe I wasn't looking at the race ones you're referring to? I guess nowadays any brand can be a crap shoot |
The GM Performance lifters with the stock dog bones should handle that cam with no issues. I’m no engine builder but got the blessings from top builders that the GM stuff works great on my .610/,627 cam. When i installed everything the lifter was still flush with the top of the dog bone bottomed out and still had about 3/32” left before lifting the dog bone. |

Spoke with the clowns at the shop today and they want me to readjust all the valves and see if it goes away...the engine did sit for awhile while I was finishing up other things on the boat and they are thinking the lifters may have drained down and pumped up a little differently than they did when they originally set them...going to give it a shot before I rip into it even further and see what happens....thanks for the insight on the GM ones!! Will def check into them if the noise doesn't go away
