This is a rebuild and am yet to fit external hydraulic.
I do have it all to fit.
Is the valve internal in the pump?

unscrew the the the large nut where the high pressure line hooks up it site behind there

What do you think about the jumpy ratchety feeling in the steering now,Air??
It feels like air but I would think it should have bled itself by now.

Just reread one of your posts.
I wouldn't have power assist if the lines were crossed?
Wonder if the rack failing gives similar symptoms.
