Will do BUP. Hopefully just bearing fines.

I will take ya'lls advice and strip it if signs of shavings anywhere other than pan and the oil filter since it only ran a few seconds when knocking. Of course it might have been tearing up one journal bearing for awhile before that just didn't start knocking untill restarted it.

thanks. I will give update.

yea , as stated already , if you have metal in oil, you need to completely go thru motor.
i just had to do this , as a result of destroying a valley baffle.
oil filter caught 99 % of metal,,,,thanks WIX.
but tanked the block , all new bearings rings, washed soaked lifters real good,
then put it all together.

Didn't plastic gauge and think some dust got on the bearings. I didn't get 50 miles out of the motor before the rods started knocking

That is a great story. Though depending on bearings, a certain amount of 'bedding' in the bearing babbit saves a lot of potential failures. I had some thrust on my crank that ate away the thrust bearing, and put it into the oil. Oil bypass, was feeding the large chunks to the mains. Took an all day WOT to end up spinning a bearing on #4 SBC 355.

On teardown, I could not believe how much foreign material was bedded into the bearing, and still functioning.

That is one factor of the oil suction dipstick style, the oil in the trap does not move, and does not represent the actual state of the engine oil. So when I check oil every daily use, I only saw clean oil. Blowing the tube out, will fix that though.

If your at the point of pulling and opening the bottom end how much more would full refresh cost? I hate going over budget but the piece of mind knowing it’s good for another grand.

Absolutely you can do this. I've done it many times.
