Offshore race boats from 80's

I was watching some older clips of offshore racing 80's,,and sounds like they ran small blocks back then,,WHY???

big block came out in 1965

weight???

original modified class had limited cubic inch and for the size small blocks were lighter and revved higher. some of the other classes I think were better with small blocks.

I worked with a guy 20 years ago, and was a throttle man on a race out of Detroit area, he said they ran small blocks with tunnel rams..
