731 might be better alternative or that 8800 with dry exhaust. (Running dry regardless) Just throwing some things out there. Not meaning to take away from OP. Maybe 5,500 but would like to try an achieve a little with the right combo and yes going with larger valves 219/225-188. Been playing around with the ports and chamber but need to get to flow bench before continuing.

I get it completely especially when you look at the numbers. Why throttle 500 + - more rpm on your engines/drives for an extra 10-15 hp.

I wonder how the old worked over 049's would perform in a 496 with either of two cams mentioned with the single 2904 eddy intake or airgap. Twin app heavier boat. 5,500-5,700. Stock heads are pretty much done at .520 lift or so but with the right port job can get get half way decent numbers up to .600 plus or so. Not looking for any serious power but I would think you could achieve some decent numbers for some budget builds.

Im actually putting together a budget build for a buddys truck. Its going to be a 516ci (4.530 x 4.00), 9.25:1 compression , with ported 049 heads that got 2.19/1.88 valves installed. Goal is low speed torque obviously. If it makes peak power at 4800-5000 thats totally fine.

Similar build other than 4.310-4.25. Is there a specific goal for power or just reliable stump puller. If I could get near 500/525 hp @ 5k plus range of reliable power I'd do it. No custom cam etc just a well built simple build. Saving other good guy parts for larger cubic inch builds.
