How to remove Baked on exhaust grime?
 

I have new Gaffrig Stainless steel exhaust mufflers and the two Starboard ones have the black grime on them from the exhaust gasses. Unually this wipes right off with water or black streak remover. This time it seems to be thick and baked on. It is only on the top and in a smalller area. The rest washed right off. I can get it off with my fingernail but I dont want to use something abrasive. I remember someone talking about EZ-Off a while back. I am concerned about it discoloring or damaging the polished stainless.

Any tips on removal?

Try simple green

I will try the oven cleaner next.

I used simple green, It wont touch it. Workes fine on the "normal" Stuff and on the fiber glass but not the baked on on the Tips.

Lime-Away works like a charm. Just wipe on and rinse with water. Not really baked on, more like mineral deposits from evaporating water on hot pipes.

I'm not sure but it looks like black soot baked on. I tried the CLR stuff too it did not work either. It seems it is exhaust soot as it looks like the inside of the tail pipe.

I have had pretty good luck usine Never Dull to get this stuff off, it takes a little elbow grease but does work.
Also chrome polish will cut the stuff but not as well as never dull.

I use the Works Tub and Shower. Spray it on, wait 30 seconds and spray it off. Sometimes I have to do it twice if it is baked on good.

You could also try laquer thinner.

CLR !!!!!!!! pour it on, wipe it off,,, no scrubbing !!!!!!! Also cleans the yellow stains off gel coat we get from running in the canal up here.
