Sorry, 1998 Gen VI 502

So the outdrive reservoir is an easy relocation fix.

What have you guys done to address the oil filter relocation? It really appears to be the mounting bracket

LakeHuronPower 05-05-2020 12:12 PM

I ran into this with EMI exhaust. I basically just chopped the oil filter mount off of the power steering pump bracket. Eddie marine sells a filter bracket for this but I made my own since they couldn't get me one fast enough. I had to make a custom hose for the filter to oil cooler using AN-8 hose. You could just add an extension to this hose though.

Great, thank you for the pic too.

Would this work for you?

It might. Did it bolt to the risers?

Texascuda 05-06-2020 09:11 PM

I think so, but it's been awhile came off my 1997 502 could go remote

Got a few options. Was considering getting the mount from a 97 7.4l as that's what the exhaust fit perfectly. That one you posted might work too. Last option would be mounting to the transom like your last pic. Regardless looks like I'l be running new oil hoses at least.

Shoot me a PM with a price for that mount if you're selling it. Thanks

The pics a bit blurry, but I cut a piece of steel with a hole saw and just extended it. Mine is the original

Thanks, that's another good tip

So you guys have given me an idea. Cut the mounting bracket and bolt a piece of SS to the bracket that's left and mount the filter to that. This should move the oil filter mount forward almost 3". I think that would clear.

The out drive reservoir can be relocated to the transom easily.

Then run new hose from the oil cooler and to the block.

Question though. How do you address a "U" turn from the engine block oil location with AN fittings?

And what size hose and fittings are the oil lines?

I plan on using braided hose and aluminum AN fittings.

Relocate it to about here

Cut the bracket here

Mine is the version that oil filter hangs down but I did exactly what you are suggesting. Made a bracket, bolted down on riser mounting bolts, moved filter forward enough to clear. I just painted bracket black. Also moved drive reservoir to transom, and put shift quadrant on transom.

Thanks for the reply,

Shift cables will fit just fine with the mounting bracket .

Don't want to start a new thread asking a question prob beat to death, but i don't know An fitting sizes from Adam.

Does anyone know what size fittings I need for the new oil hose? Want to use SS braided hose with good connectors. Thanks

GLENAMY 242SS 05-19-2020 08:41 AM

each an number is 1/16" Hence an-12 = 3/4" an-8 = 1/2" an-16 = 1" etc.

AN -8. Problem is the filter mount, oil cooler, and original chevy filter pad area all have one male AN-8 flare and one female inverted JIC tube flare. So it is easy to find a hose end that can mount to the male AN fitting, but the inverted flare can be difficult, I couldn't find a fitting or hose end that wasn't just bare steel when I did this job so I cut the original hose apart and used the one tube end of it with a compression-to-AN fitting to mount to the hose I made.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Nothing's ever easy.....

Don't have to change oil lines.

Removed the bracket. Loosened the oil filter nuts. Loosened the oil cooler clamp and water hoses.

Lifted the cooler up a touch and spun it a little bit too.

Spun the filter housing so the lines would orient themselves without having to rebend the hoses.

Will need to make the bracket, but that's easy. And relocate the out drive reservoir That's easy too.

I'll prob want to change the spark plugs now. Because it won't be fun when these are installed.
