Stelling Boxes on my Formula 302
Anyone have any idea if I will see any improvements if I was to add Stelling Boxes to my Fromula 302 with TRS drives?
Jon |
I'm thinking a blonde, maybe about 5'9", 135 lbs., really deep tan, yellow bikini (french-cut), would do a lot more than those dam boxes.

I don't think they make boxes for the TRS drive....but how about the TRS to Bravo conversion boxes by Stellings.

Crazyhorse : cool idea
Audiofn you should also consider back4more's 'trs to bravo' idea |
Crazy I already have the blond. :D :D
They definatly made a Stelling box for TRS. Maybe not now but they used to. I have a line on some stuff cheap and I am wondering if I should buy it or not. I have stock 330's now and I run about 60 TOPS. From there I may add larger engines in the future. Crazy is going to design them for me :D Jon |
audiofn,
you would see about 3 - 5 mph but before you do that be prepared. it is a big job and once you start can't stop and it may become pricey. for example now you will be changing the attitude of the boat so you will need a new set of props ( 1,000.00 ) and it kepps going from there. Treadwell |
Tredwell I have two sets of props that I think would be a go for this set up. Obviously the engines have to come out and so do the transome assemblies. Then everything has to bolt back on. Am I missing anything?

no not realy just going to have to extend some trim lines, and some extensions for the external steering. but know matter what there is always gonna be somthing.
i was not trying to discourage you, just have a few bucks in the hip pocket just in case because it almost always happens that's all. if you need any help let me know. if you really wanted more speed do the conversion to bravos and the boat may hit 70 or just under. Treadwell |
there is a guy in austin with boxes on his stepped 38 formula.

Tredwell do you really think that much of a gain with Bravos? I know a couple people that changed (on different boats) and saw no gain. Did they set up wrong? I actually really like the no clunk easy shifting of the TRS drives. Are there any other advantages to stelling boxes besides speed like stability, or running less trim so you will fly flatter?
I have the extension brackets already but you did mention the trim lines, I had not thought of those, so as you say there is always something that you miss :D |
Bill what was the problem with the boxes tha they have? for the TRS to Bravo swap? I will try and give ya a call later today :D
Jon |
With all due respect, you will not gain 10 mph by simply swapping to Bravos. Assuming you use the same X dimension, the most you'll see is a couple of mph max.
I will say that if you ever do the conversion, you do have the luxury of moving the X up a bit. Formula was pretty conservative back then. I believe I saw a 1-3/4" raise on a 302 with trs's running Quad IV's that still didn't need to be feathered. You might want to ask Boilerdaddy to research this. I know on Porters old 'Secret Formula' 302 SR1 race boat, they did alot of testing on various heights. When that boat was sitting behind the factory, I noticed multiple drive mounting marks on the transom. Regarding the boxes, with the proper set up and a bit more power, they should add about 5 mph +/-. That's about what that dealer down south is seeing on the newer ones and they seem to equip quite a few of them with boxes. You might want to talk to them too. I hope this helps. PS--When are we going to see some updates on your progress? |
