Transom Assembly Questions
I've got a couple questions for the guys who know what their doing. I'm installing a bravo one on a boat that had an omc, it's my first b1.
The b1 has MercCathode on it, I'm not using it, instead I'm running an zinc in place. The trim manifold has a hole in it for the MercCathode wire to enter the boat. I've seen block off plates with a gasket to plug that hole but it looks like that is intended to be used without the zinc. If I want to run the zinc there can I do that hole with 5200?id like something a little bit more reliable, thinking about JB Welding it shut. Thoughts? This is a 2005 TA, it's in really nice condition. The exhaust block off plate looks good but I'm thinking about pulling it off and reinstalling it with new 5200. (I'm running thru hull.) Think I should do that or just run it? It looks fine but I don't want to chance it, I'm about to put it in the boat and I'd obviously rather play with it on the table than in the boat. Not to sound like an a$$hole...but what is your fascination with 5200? that trim block is never going to come off now. Forget servicing it...no way without damaging the housing or the block. Why not just use the appropriate gaskets?
in terms of the block off plate if you want to take it off, inspect the o ring or buy a new o-ring...skip the 5200. You don’t need it. regarding the zinc...pretty sure you can use a gasket. If you don’t feel comfortable buy the plate with the gasket and longer screws for the zinc and sandwich it all together. You don’t need 5200. |
I recently pulled an alpha out of a boat much newer then mine and the transom was rotting out right in this area because of a leak from somewhere.
This is my first b1 and I'm just overly paranoid. I am glad to hear that gasket in between the ta/manifold sounds reliable, right? I was scared of it that's all. I'll buy a new o-ring for the exhaust plate. Thanks |
Reasons to use 5200 are few and far between. Definetly don’t get in the habit of using it as gasket maker.....

That's what its designed for, but also note it is used with wires going thru it. That said, the there should be no issue with sealing so long as the zinc (or aluminum) fits pattern

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Can I sneak another question in here while I've got ya? I'm getting ready to finish the motor mounts on the stringers so I'm bolting up the bellhousing, one plate and motor mounts to the block and I'm going to set it in and figure out where to mount the mounts in the stringers. I have two of everything and I'm not sure if I have an extra set of the thick (tall) steel spacers or if I need these in there as well. Can you tell by the pictures if the pair of spacers in my hand is extra or if they go in there as well? It looks to me like there are spacers pressed into the bellhousing already. If you notice anything else I'm screwing up I'd appreciate it as well.

Be careful not to over torque those bolts...someone at mercury thought it was a good idea to make the nuts out of aluminum. Smh...good luck
