Its interesting. Why is it that some automotive MANUAL transmissions run 90 wt, others use ATF ????

Wish i had the time and money, i like to play and try things, so it would be a shock if a good ATF would work in an outdrive!!!

Just a note: Air in the gear oil helps the gears spin easier in the oil in the lower unit than it does just oil.. I know some racers that have plugged of between the two cases, then drill and tap an "upper" oil drain hole for the LOWER unit below the joining surfaces of the cases.

The idea is to get air entrapped at the top of the lower case....... just like the upper case traps air.

I think these guys look for every 1/4 mph they can get.

ATF in a constant high load high shock high temp high power diff with two sets of 90* power transfers ?

Totally not an ATF environment that a few manual gearboxes are/can be.

No car or light truck see’s the constant high load a boat see’s, even if boat driven easy.

I'm really curious about the moly additive and the cone clutch..

Yes, I was surprised. But I turned it on and off with a simple gear lube change. Amsoil was too slick evidently.

I run Amsoil Severe Gear in my #6's and transmissions.

ALL IN. Interesting about the Amsoil experience you had.

Only ones i have run were Merc, Bravo Shop, and last two years was Bel Ray gear oil. Just sooooo much cheaper. Of course price is really nothing if you have issues with it, so i would never something that i thought wouldnt work good to save any amount of money.
. Bel Ray said if you don't truly need the synthetics, as in low temps, etc, then the plain dino oil like the Bel Ray and others will perform just fine within the manf change recommendations.

Some say Merc is a "low bidder" type situation and no better than many other oils. Who knows. Does Merc really want it to be the best .... I doubt it.

lol, that’s no thinner than a synthetic 90w gear lube and with none of the protection either. Oops.

I'm a believer in Amsoil products, but I put some in my Bravo XR once and the clutch slipped immediately. Went back to dino oil and the condition went away.

It appears Amsoil has changed their formulation in the Severe Gear. George from All American Drive ran into it a while back and is warning people. He sells NEO oil which is a bit pricey, $85.00 a gallon, that's why he can warranty a drive for 24 months even in high horsepower applications. If you want your drive to live as long as possible than you need to be using NEO. I have 2 years on the oil in my drive and it's still clear. I was nervous about running gear lube that long especially the way I drive, so I check it regularly and magnets are clean and oil is clear. Transmission shifts like a dream.

Yep that's the stuff, except I buy it from AADS for $85. That stuff is so slippery, don't get it on anything that you want to pick up.

Drock78 06-29-2020 10:55 AM

You realize that you can buy it directly from NEO for $70 a gallon?
