Is it feasible the resistance was in the failing drive until the engine built enough power to overwhelm it?

Hmmm, that’s a thought, but I’ve been trying to address this issue since I bought the boat in March of this year. The drive fluid showed no signs of trouble and no signs of metal during the past few months.

rare 2001 Formula 292 with a single engine. Built for class 5 racing, no cabin interior, built light.

But, the boat was never raced, kinda been converted to a performance pleasure boat since it was new.

200 hrs on XR gears is a pretty average lifespan. Most of the time its the upper gears that let go though

Bigsbetter 08-04-2020 01:11 PM

So what is recommended here? Upper gear inspection/ replace the upper gears and also replace the complete lower assembly?

Go with XZ gears in the upper. They will last alot longer. Full rebuild on lower as well.

Yeah, especially since the OP said its a light layup. Makes sense.

Lol. Was driving and missed that part.

Usually it's the gears that fail but anything is possible I suppose. I'm thinking it may be the prop if you changed and spun the other with no problem.

just bustin ur ballz
