Power steering pump went grenade.
Any thoughts on how this hapened would be apreciated. 502 MPI mags, recent rebuilds (less than 15 hours). Felt steering start to be sluggish, then a squeal in the engine compartment and THUMP goes the belt. Shut down the Starboard engine, and recovered the belt and pulley.
Notice how it deformed the mounting hole to the left IE the way the belt pulls. Fluid found its way to the bilge so thats another fun job. I read through some older threads on how its not a magic pump but dont know how to swap out XYZ pressure something. http://i.imgur.com/PwtImktl.jpg |
That ran completely dry for a while. Looks like it was nearly on fire.

Bearing was about bone dry. It fought a good fight for awhile. Drain the lines, flush the system completely to get all of the fine metal out of it & put in a new pump.

Well that was fun. Got a new pump and transferred the regulator from the dead one. Then started to think like a smart man. Pump dry...How did fluid escape? Put about a quart in and fired up the motor. There is a fitting with about 7 inches of line that had a nick in it just gushing out the fluid. Its located at the back/top of the motor. Cant find it on a diagram so Ill see if the guys at NAPA can make it for me.
So yea, its time for a flush and fill................and clean out the bilge with the MiTVac. |
