Cast vs. forged crank differences on a Gen V 454
Is it safe to say that all Gen V 454’s had cast cranks? My boat is a 92 model with the aluminum valve covers, but the engine had been changed out by the previous owner. He told me the replacement engine came out of a one ton truck. It’s a four bolt main, was .030” over when I got it, and there’s no provision for the fuel pump. It also has a one piece rear main seal
Any possibility that it has a forged crank, or were all the Gen V’s cast cranks? |
I have one here I am working on out of a 99 3500 truck and it is cast. Cant say I have ever seen a steel one out of a 454 but I have not seen that many of them in here. I have a 454 Mag MPI here too but have not started taking it apart yet.

does it have 7.4 cast in the block ?

No way to tell what crank is in it. If it was a Merc mag engine, it would be forged. If it was a non mag engine, then it would be cast.

I honestly don’t recall. I have it out of the boat, and the block is at the machine shop.

look at the parting lines - Cast is a very definite thin line...
If the engine is tore down, you could have googled the cast in part number |

all you have to do is look at the crank to see if its cast or steel
