oil temp question
Gen 6, 502. Is this the correct/best location(closet hole to oil filter boss on the bottom of the block) for the oil temp sensor? Also, does this oil cooler look big enough for 500hp? The reason I ask is the motor would steadily build oil temp when at 4000(or more) rpm until it would get up to 220 and I would slow down with concern of it being to high. If I slow down to 2800-3000 for a minute or two the temp quickly drops back down. Then start going again and it creeps back up until I have to slow down. Takes probably 5-8 minutes to go from 100 to 220 degrees running 4000. I run 8 quarts of VR1 20w-50 which shows as full on the dipstick.
To save the trouble of someone asking. The motor is apart now because it pushed the head gasket into the water jacket on the number 6 cylinder. The motor is back from the machine shop and with the engine builder now. Hope to have it back next week. Also, thats the whole oil cooling/filtering system there on the side of the motor. The two hoses hanging on the back of the engine stand go to the remote oil filter. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7b94a4698c.jpg Thanks in Advance, jadento |
220 deg is the perfect oil temp.

I would say 260* is about the max you want at WOT.

Might try measuring oil temp with infrared thermometer at oil filter. My gauges both read 10-15 degs higher than actual and my sensors are mounted on remote oil filter assy.
My gen-4 454 mags were bumped up to abt 500 hp and orig oil cooler has trouble keeping up at WOT. Eventually I will get around to upgrading oil coolers and add a thermostat so oil isn't too cold (which is bad too). Lots of discussion abt this subject in the past. Might also want to think abt increasing oil hose and fitting diameters, especially if you plan on adding more power later on. |
Yes , hit various locations with a non-contact thermometer , my gauge reads about 25* hotter than anywhere on the engine .

Motor is back. All freshened up. If there is an opening in the rain tomorrow its going back in.
