SRP piston to wall clearance and ring end-gap - Closed Cooling?
Thoughts on proper clearances when moving to closed cooling at approximately 600 HP? Salt water so I need closed cooling to protect the top-end. I have the block waiting on the final hone and I'd like to give the final go-ahead on the proper piston-wall clearance. Should I err on the side of running it open just in case? Same with the ring-end gap?
TIA TZ |
whatever srp sais is what i would do.because it is clos
ed cooling i see no reason for xtra piston to wall clearance.i would inc reas the top&second ring gaps .001 per inch. |
Thanks Mike!

High (loose) end of the SRP spec
I just put some SRPs in my engines, they ask for a 400 grit final Plateau hone if u use the JE rings they come with FYI |
Mine didn’t come with the rings, but I am using JE’s pro seal plasma moly rings.

What bore size? .0035-.0045 is probably about right for 4032 material and closed cooling depending on bore size. I'm sure the SRP spec is right there.
Ring gap will likely be bore size x .0045-.0050. So a 4.500" bore would be .020-.022 |
It's a 4.500" bore. I will check the specs that came with the pistons.
At this power level, what kind of temperatures are typical with closed cooling? I think that would dictate some specs. It is better to set it up with a 140 stat in an effort to run cooler or is it better to let it roll at say 160-180 to take advantage of heat? I can create a separate thread on this if needed. |
