u-joint press

I need to swap out the input shaft on an XR from standard to ITS. What are you guys using other than the merc spec tool? Does anyone make one that has the needed mandrels to push out the u joint?

I use a c clamp, pop off the clip on the cap that will contact the yoke when going in the direction you’re going to push, take a socket that is larger the the o d of the cap to push the cap into, and a socket that is smaller than the o d of the cap to push on, clamp between the 2 sockets and clamp away

Thanks- Sounds easy enough.

There has to be something on Youtube.

Just one thing to look out for. if you haven't done this before... when you are re-installing the u-joint caps, you can over compress the cap onto the yoke where the joint is tight and doesn't want to rotate. If installed like this, it will cut the service life of the u-joint way down. You want to compress the cap to just get the retainer on and no deeper.

The big c clamp that comes in a ball joint service kit works perfectly
