The engine heads have been overhauled.
Time to start up the engine again and hope it will run fine this time. When I turn the key on, a relay is clicking constantly. The relay on top of the engine at the ECU. This one: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c9ea83e1a.jpeg Why is it clicking? It happened after this: I tried to start it up for a first try before the relay startet to click. The engine turned over a couple of times letting fuel pump forward in the system. Stoped the engine, and cranked it again, this time it only cranked maybe half a turn and I heard a electrical spark or something and the engine stoped cranking.. it smelled electrical smoke so I turned all safety switches off and took of the cables from the battery. Went all over the electrical system and found two nuts where loose to the slave relay to the starter, strange because I havent touched them. (Yellow cable with red stripe, and red cable with blue/or purple stripe). Tightened it up and after this the relay is clicking.. have something happened to the relay or maybe something else? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b06d2e3c2.jpeg 12+ v on starter key and on the main fuse on the engine (the red push button). The engine fuel pump is starting when I turn the key on But it is this relay clicking sound. Dont want to try to start the engine before I have answears what it can be/or what happened. |
Do you think you blew that fuse link on by the starter? You could test it for continuity.

It says that the relay is ”throttle shiftcable relay”, I dont have the throttle linkage on the throttle body.. can it cause this clicking to happen? |
I really don't know but I'd have everything hooked up and adjusted like it should be to eliminate any possibilities. You smelled something burn so hopefully you can find it. I've found where the burning happened in the past by sniffing around, usually the smell stays right on the part that smoked.
Here is the fuse I was talking about. Your engine won't crank when this is blown. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7ceb2a675.jpeg |

Switched the relay from the other beside this one (it is the same), to see if it was the relay that was bad. But it clicking anyway.
Put the throttle linkage back on the throttle body also, nothing happened. The relay still clicking |
Make sure your battery and grd connection is tight. A loose ground terminal to starter could give you a burning smell.
|
No loose cables anywhere where I can find..
I tried to crank her up. It did fire up.. But on the Smartcraft display it says ”warning” and it still clicking. Didnt hear if it clicked when the engine was turned on. Dont know the fault code yet. Gonna try to see if I can find it in the VesselView app. |
Can you post the color of wires on relay? I maybe able to look at wiring diagram I have(2002 496) to see what it controls? engine year?

Here is two pictures of the relay cables To me it looks like Blue with brown stripe Brown/or purple with orange/or red stripe Pink with white stripe Blue and little yellow on it? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...951ad0bc6.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...961fe8bd4.jpeg |
The only wiring diagram I found is this.
But the colours dont match with the two relays on the diagram. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...598ce7b87d.png |
Wire colors are different but that should be the trim pump relay which is used with smartcraft

Pink w/ white stripe Blue w/ yellow stripe Purple w/ red stripe Blue w/ red/or purple stripe the only wiring diagram I found is this, but the picture is cut right where the relay is at the bottom, of course.. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4e47dd5da.jpeg But you say it is the trim pump relay.. Hmmm.. I wonder why its clicking. I dont have the drive on the boat yet. I have not filled up the drive lube yet too. I havent touched the trim pump, only the ground cable. But it looks like it has good ground on the back of the engine.. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3026b1306c.jpg thanks |
Problem solved!
it was as AllDodge said the trim pump relay. I turned on the key (did not starting the engine). Moved the gimbal housing where the drive should be (i Dont have the drive on right now) and the clicking disapeared. I think it was something with the connection between trim sender and trim pump/trim pump relay ore something |
Nice work AllDodge!

A lot of good information in this post. Glad it is all coming together for you!
What ended up being wrong with your heads that they needed rebuilt? Did you end up having a bent pushrod? How was the pressure test on the headers? |
Just a question again about same problem.
When I turn the key off, and turn it on again (not starting the engine) the trim pump relay is clicking again. Is it because the drive aint on place, and the trim sender/trim pump relay doesnt know why the ”trim arms” isnt align with the gimbal house/drive? |
If the PCM is not getting the correct info (unsure about what is installed, so its trying to adjust). Just remove the the relay for now
