BBC head studs

Installing a set of head studs and there is a lot of different ideas on stud nut torque specs especially with aluminum heads. ARP says 80flbs seems a bit much. some say as low as 65flbs...
454 blower motors with about 6 lbs of boost. Some of the threads say around 70-75flbs. any input would be greatly appreciated...

All depends on the material of the stud. Go with manufacturer specs on the studs you buy. (it's the elongation of elasticity of the given material that the stud is made from that is important)

Why would you not do what the stud manufacturer says ??

ARP says 80 then do 80. Unless you know something they don`t .

I`ve always done 80 with my ARP head bolts .

All good answers. ^^^
Do it the Canadian way. Yes, a few Canadians told me this.

Tighten it till it breaks, then back it off a touch. :) :wink

ARP says 80FLBS less with aluminum heads. How much less?

I torque mine to 75# with ARP lube. Aluminum heads.

SB 03-09-2021 08:54 AM

Yup, Most say 70-75 max with arp lube aluminum heads.

do indeed use the Arp thread lube we just installed new Arp studs in a dart block with big cheif heads and torqued to 80 with a mls gasket

I always lightly lube both matting surfaces also. Torque again after a little run time.

I also put a little Permatex on the studs in the block as the bottoms are exposed to the water in the water jacket. I'm with SB on the torque.
