Hydraulic Steering System
 

Hey guys/gals, looking for some input on hydraulic steering systems, Im looking to upgrade my Checkmate to full hydraulic steering from the stock setup. Wondering what opinions are on the best way of going about this? Who makes a good kit? Best bang for your buck type thing? I dont want to cheap out by any means on it but also dont want to break the bank. Boat is a 1995 Checkmate Convincor 253

I installed a mayfair system from Hardin/CP performance. Great looking parts, install went smooth. System has been working great this year.

Thats great to hear! Everything you needed was included with the kit then?

Yes it was very complete and they have a good video on how to mount/install the cylinders.

Zeiger would be another good choice.

I did an IMCO on my 292.

I'm very happy with the results.

I just did the Mayfair/Imco unit from CP Performance as well. Nice kit a side from a couple of brackets I built the kit was complete. Nice for the money, I was going to do a Zeigler but he gave me one price (which was higher) then when I went to order it he said he made a mistake and the price went up another 1800.00. Nice stuff but pricey.

I did the IMCO add-on hydraulic steering assist kit a few months ago, along with a new rack helm and cable. Steers so much better now, but even with the new rack, cable and steering assist kit there is still some play in the wheel. It's way better than it was with just the OEM cable steering, buuut......I am going to go ahead and go with IMCO full hydraulic steering this winter. Having the painful part (drilling holes in the transom and outdrive for the cap) done already, the rest will be pretty easy, though a little pricey. The IMCO people (Ron especially) are great to work with and are most helpful with any questions.

I did the IMCO setup (complete steering system) 10 years ago. It was easy to do, just took a few days. Never had an issue since, boat practically drives itself. Sold all the takeoff parts on here and Craigslist. Recouped some of the expense. My advice, get the complete matched system, take lots of pictures, measure 3 to 4 times before cutting, drilling or anything else. Celebrate afterwards with your favorite beverage. Did not want to make a buzzed up mistake ! LOL !! Oh, their instructions are easy to follow and they sell part if you have any issues down the road.
