Oil filter Question - Since I have not seen one in a while

Recently, (I don't know why), I started doing some reading on oil filters, and have not seen many posts in a long time. Anyway, I have always run mobil 1 15W-50, or Lucas 20W-50 with Wix 51060R filters in my small blocks. Dart blocks - dual remote filters in series - no bypasses anywhere. Engines run close to 6000 RPMS and I have 10% over volume pumps and bigger pans, I know the wix filters down to 61 microns, but flow 28 GPM. I was considering trying out the Royal Purple 30-1218 to filter the oil a bit more.

Royal purple tech indicated that they do not measure flow, or could not provide a number, but measure pressure drop @ 20 GPMs. (4 PSI drop with their filter, versus a stock gm filter at a 10 PSI drop). bur filter to below 20-25 Microns.

At 6000 rpms, the oi pump pumps 21.45 gals per minute & flow is just as important as pressure.

Has anyone run the Royal purple 30-1218 - any issues ?

Just wanted to keep as much oil flowing as possible. Or am I overthiking this, and should just stick with the Wix 51060R ?

Thanks,
Ratchet

Engine masters did a whole episode on this .
Long story Short K&N filter had the best flow and micron rating.

I run Mobil 1 Filters. My second choice would be K&N. Both use a synthetic filter media that won't swell if you get moisture.

There are a quazzillion circle track and road race sbc’s using one (vs two) of the filters the OP is using.

fun facts: the 1060R has a anti drain back valve. The 1061R does not. Otherwise, they are pretty much identical.

The Moroso is a 27 micron and are designed for flow.

Wondering if any of you boat guys use the System 1 filters ?? I try to get racers to use them because you can open them up after each race and check for any bearing material etc. They are expensive but you only buy them once. The filter elements are cleanable and can be easily inspected at each oil change. They have them in all popular sizes and a couple of different micron ratings.

Just curious.

I take it the Mobil1 1 M302A ?

The quazillion folks are running the 51060R (or remove the 5 and you get a napa numper) I assume. I typically change my oil once a year. Have the filters cut open & look for anything strange, metals, etc So far so good with a couple neodymium magnets on the bottom of the oil pans as well.

Surprising no commets on RP filters.

Prolly stay away from ?

System ones look nice, but if I go with 4, I can buy 90-100 Wix or similar filters. Maybe I will look into these on another build

Compared to what other brands? This is the first I have ever heard of Shell filters. I'll have to do some research.

Did some research. They are just rebranded Purolator filters. Appears to be built using Purolators older build quality, which was good.

i wondered who was making them thank you the quality of the steel is thicker and when you cut it open it looks well built

&A came from Wix's website.....

Q:
I bought 2 of the racing filters after reading they perform well for high perf motors. My problem and question is after reading the filter box, they warn not for street use. Is there something in the filter requiring higher oil pressure or ???. I was going to return the filter because of this warning. My motor is a Chev SB 350 in a Chevelle.
Asked by TONY on June 19, 2016
A:
Tony, thank you for your question. The reason these filters are not intended for street use is the micron rating. These filters will capture particles as small as 61 microns. WIX-51069 filters, for example, will capture particles as small as 21 microns. The race filters are less restrictive, and allow for more flow. However, they are meant to be used once and thrown away (and the oil replaced with clean, race oil). They should not be used on a vehicle that is driven regularly. They will not filter the finer particles that come from the wear and tear of driving a car for 3,000 miles before changing the oil and filter. Those fine particles in the oil can cause wear, damage, and restriction to oil flow throughout the engine, over time. We hope that helps clear things up for you. If you drive your car regularly, we would recommend using a filter with a smaller micron rating, like the WIX-51069.

Use the regular Wix oil filters. IMO!!

Interesting comment from Wix about the race filters,

Pure Power makes reusable filters. Aluminum housing and stainless mesh filter material. Even the short version filters great. We've installed them on race engines and hi-performance street cars with excellent results. One of the things we've noticed is that on the majority of customers who run regular filters develope a light film coating the bottom of the oil pan. With the Pure Power that's never there. It's laying on the bottom of the filter. There's several copies of this filter out there that use the same mesh filter media. Just can't remember the different names. Plus you can clean them out and reuse them almost infinitely.

Has anyone looked at the new FRAM Ultra Synthetic? I've used the Mobil1 1 M302A for years but saw a video of a guy cutting both of these up, and the FRAM looks really well (and better) built (unlike all the older videos I've seen) so tempting to use the FRAM Ultra. XG5 (which shows as the cross-reference for the XIX 51060XP as well)

Here were the results of the engine masters test. I wish they would have had the Mobil 1 M302A in the test.

I stand corrected, media is synthetic blend on K&N. This was the last one I cut open.

Might look like paper, but from everything I've read, they are made of synthetic fibers ...........https://www.knfilters.com/oil-filters
"K&N engine oil filters are designed with advanced synthetic fibers, and are available for different types of cars, trucks, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and watercraft. K&N filters are engineered to meet or exceed OEM requirements, and rigorously tested for efficiency, capacity, and burst strength."

FRAM "XG" series
K&N
MOBILE 1
Cant go wrong with one of these.

Just FYI on fram filters. Just a few years ago, i had two, yes two, F oil filters that i cut open and the filter media glue was all over the place, and not in some places at the ends of the pleats where it truly needed to be. It had gaps which allowed unfiltered oil to pass thru.

Truth be told that was on the low end line of fram., a cartridge type for a Camry. I've never used that one since. The company did send me a free case of them for my inconvenience and the info I relayed to them.

However, the XG spin on series these days does seem to be a very good filter, so I would not hesitate to use it , or the Mobile 1 or K&N.

I prefer Parallel vs series filters with no bypass, to reduce filter pressure, and double the media surface area for flow.

Just use quality filters.

A low micron rated filter will polish the oil well enough.

I like the Fleetguard LF16035 Stratapore. Designed for the Cummins Diesel, and readily available.

Max working pressure 125psi.
60 micron100%
30 micron 60%
8.72 gpm

Is there any benefit to running a series system that I'm not tracking?
