what prop?
what prop should i be running?
i have a 1979 pantera 24' with a 454 330hp motor and the merc 330 outdrive. I understand there are new "high tech" props that should get me up to about 65mph??? got any suggestions? thanks mark |
Prop size suggestions
Try a 25P Mirage Plus. Most shops will let you try loaners. See if you a couple different pitches.

M,
If you find one of those "high tech" props you better buy it. 65MPH sound really optomistic for a 24' V-hull and 330hp. What do you get now , and with what prop? My guess is low 60's ,if that. Maybe only 58 perhaps:rolleyes: . |
to be honest i don't even know
i have a 23p prop now -- and have not had the boat out yet (just picked it up as a project boat). Jo from pantera was telling me that with the new props i should get 65 -- |
the prop it came with took a hit of some sort -- i am getting it rebuilt and will have it back on friday -- hope to get it out sat or sun for a test run.
|
ok -- i have some more info now!
mph was roughly 55-58 rpm was 5000 prop was a 3 blade 23p what direction should i go with a prop? thanks! mark |
Try to get your hands on a 25p Mirage. Your rpms are too high for a 330. Max rpm for a 330 is 4200-4600. The 25 will get your rpm down around 4500. You might pick up a couple mph also.
Good luck, Kurt. |
Prop Choice
If you're looking for top end, move up to a 25P Mirage Plus. You won't have any holeshot. Another option is de pitching a 25 to make a 24P. I did this on a 22' Baja Hammer 310 HP worked great, decent hole shot and good top end. The 23P I was running had a great hole shot but low top end and the 25P just the opposite.
Good Luck Ps. I run a 29P on my 24' Pantera Sport. But I'm running about 650HP too!!!! |
And for top speed use a regular Mirage, I understand the Mirage plus is slower.
|
thanks guy's -- i'll see if i can find one -- and try it out.
|
oh one other thing -- most of my guages don't work -- so my tach may be reporting errors
|
Mirage plus definetly has more mid range and top end speed,
|
just picked up a 25p mirage plus -- will try it out thursday morning.
the prop shop guy said something about venting it -- if i got good top end -- but a bad hole shot -- sound right? |
23 pitch mirage plus thinned out add cupping in the tips and rebalance to perffection/ this willwork great /good holeshot midrange accleration will be strong and will run good on top end./ i think a 25 labbed or not will be sluggish /always remember to test with normal load factors /people/fuel/full coolers ect. good luck

Was that boat for sale on here a month ago?

I have a 1981 24ft Pantera with a 454 with Merlin head 130cc(?) Team G and 1050 carb with MSD stuff hooked on to a Bravo one drive. I'm still playing with my prop and carb. The numbers I got with a 23p was close to what you have but i was bumping my rev limiter at 5200. I just tried a 26p but I wasnt to happy with the results I got 55 at 4200 rpm than my carb was running lean or maybe timing was off. I'm having my brother look at it hes the mechanic. What kind of numbers to you get with your 25p? Joe said I should be getting 70mph out my setup. I've been tesingt at a lake and the hull seems to stick to glassy water unlike when i take it out in good chop it seems to run better. I'll keep you informed of my results. |
