Promaxx heads and Valako

I found a velocity stack that works with the K&N 14x4" marine approved filter. It's hard to see in this photo. When I pull my plugs and check their color, you can't tell one from the other. I don't have 8 O2's to verify.

This was 10+ years ago a pretty serious 598 solid roller Valykeo heads. I Had them assemble the short block because everything was new and needed to be machined to fit. I picked it up and finished assembly, it had a 14 quart Steffs oil pan which I put 12 quarts in and had a large note written on 2" tape 12 quarts of oil already in engine. When I brought it back for dyno I also gave them a case of oil to top it off after it was hooked up and running. While dynoing they couldn't figure out why the oil was foaming and the front seal was leaking. Needless to say the numbers were not as good as hoped for. The next day when I went to pick up the engine I asked for the rest of my oil, that's when I was told it was all put in the engine. 24 quarts in a 14 quart pan probably why the numbers were lower than expected. Good thing I spent the extra money for the fancy Steffs pan to keep the oil off the crank. Other mistakes were made.
Sorry to hear about that. I’ve heard of much worse horror stories elsewhere that were catastrophic so at least you come out ok. Not good but ok. I’m not going to be dropping off any oil though and just tell them to take care of it to prevent that one. Tks for the heads up.

Ive dynoed with just about every air filter and flame arrestor configuration now you can think of, LOL! Years ago my Pontiac with port fuel injection, dry TB was on a local dyno before I owned mine. A 14 x4 paper made slightly more power than a 14x4 kn. A 14x3 poised a measurable drop, a kn 3 x 9 which is really a 2/3/4 x 9 once you add the lips on edges made it fall off face of the earth. Was making 580ish, dropped to 540 ish, the manifold vacuum went from mid 96 map to about 92 if I remember right. That same filter with kn velocity stack was even WORSE !

So this morning we gathered up a bunch of flame arrestors to try from friends and other marine shops. The culprit to sum up a long story is: ANY flame arrestor that has a flat, tin (stainless) bottom does evil stuff when air turns into the carb, PERIOD! square edge, sharp 90 degree turn into carb= turbulence=disruption of fuel thru boosters. the HP 500 FA is just as bad, half of them out there are same. We found a used gaffrig, had about a 1/2" to 5/8 radius going into carb, AFRS were about identical to no carb, called it good, did some final carb tuning then played with timing. This 10.2-1 540 wanted 36 degrees with the promax 317s, which I find unusal for a aluminum bbc head, Smitty
On a diff note, I took a modded QF 950 that Norm did for me a few years ago and had him switch it to annular discharge boosters and custom rings that he mapped out fuel holes in concentrating on more fuel towards center of carb, we slapped that on this 540 and with the oval fa that disrupted everything the afrs were slightly farther apart then our "good" no FA runs but perfectly tunable and we saw a tq and hp gain so the annular boosters seem barely affected vs the straight and drop ;leg boosters fwiw.

Smitty, have you tried the Engine Masters salad bowl yet? Everything they have put it on has made more power, it's insane. I'll have to bring my setup by and have you test it. I added a top filter since I took that picture as I have seen multiple tests that show they add hp. The venturi base is about 3" tall so overall it's about 8". Fortunately for me, Velocity has a cold air system in the hatch that my filter sits into so I have room.
