New horn, harness relay & button No beep

New horn new harness/relay kit, new button. If the hole wasn't drilled in the dash, i wouldn't waste anybody's time looking for help.

I cut the harness ONE wire at a time to fit the boat so nothing is crossed.

--30 is fused and run to hot.

--from the middle of the plug there are 3 blacks 1 is clearly a ground that i shortened and crimped on a new ring terminal

the other 2 blacks are still in looms with 2red 87 wires

the relay does not have a spade that goes into the middle slot in tue plug

--85 red to button (that has 5 spades) the middle 3 are nc and no i have continuity when the button is pressed.

--86 black is not in the directions

there is voltage to 30 in the plug

there is no voltage to 85 red

there is no voltage to either 87 reds

continuity exists thru all wires back to the plug.

no idea no clue no vowels or swear words left,

what did i do wrong ?

how do i make it beep ?

what do i need to get ?

2 reds from 87, 3 blacks from the center of plug 2 are in looms that go to the horns. 1 black was clearly a ground

New button-- the 2 terminals with blue ink have continuity when button pushed, no direction with button, no idea what the other spades do.

The directions came with harness relay kit

Relay on left came with horns, both relays are the same

87a (the center on the plug) does not get used, per the instructions the pos that is going to 30 gets jumped to 86, the pos for the horns themselves go to 87 and the neg for the horns go to your ground strip. your button is the ground for the relay. 85 goes to one side of the button and the other side of the button goes to your ground strip

You need to figure out which two connectors on the back of the button connect together when you press the button. Once you do that hook one of them to the wire going to pin 85 on the relay and the other one to ground. Not sure what the other connectors on the button are for, maybe a light ? Any type of number on the button ?

Sorry, just read that the 2 blue connectors are together when the button is pressed. Hook one of them to pin 85 and the other one to ground. You might want to make sure that neither of them are grounded internally in the switch.

Thank you both, i really appreciate the help and fast too. Man i'm just not up on the electrical and never wired a relay before.

( a seperate wire off to ground ? )

(how would i do that ?)

(meaning the black wire from 86 is not used, and 85 from/to the button clicks 86 to 30 sending voltage to the horns ?)

( the 3 blacks coming from the plug center, 2 are ground for horns, the third is to ground strip ? )

(meaning the harness isn't a do all and a seperate ground has to be run from the button to ground strip ?)

a relay is just a switch. the ones you have are 4 pin vs 5 pin that is the plug. same plug uses both relays. a relay at rest is feeding power from 30 to 87a and when switched on sends power from 30 to 87 and disconnects it from 87a. 86 and 85 are the pos and neg that turns on the relay. as the diagram shows power jumping from 30 to 86 you have to switch on a ground to 85 (the button). your relay does not have the 87a pin as it is just an on/off rather than switching power from one thing to another, say if you had two electric pumps one would run off 87a and when you activate the relay it would switch to the other pump.

Ok 30 is hot, 87a is no pin on relay but is 3 grounds on plug, 1 to ground strip, 2 to horns
87 is 2 reds that are pre assembled with the 2 blacks from plug side of 87a in looms.

85 and 86 were connected to the button .

can i just wire the horns without the relay ?
ground the horns, run power into and out of the button to the horns and smash the relay with hammer in the driveway
just like a pump or blower.

compedgemarine 12-05-2021 06:21 PM

not sure if you can eliminate the relay. it would depend on how many amps the horns draw and what the button is rated for. assuming that is what the relay is making up for. by theory since the center on the plug is not connecting to this particular relay you can just hook the one black to ground and it will be using the plug as a splice for the two blacks from the horns to a ground. hook a 12 volt wire to the 86 pin on the plug and take the 85 wire from the plug to the button. run another wire from the button to a ground. you need to find two pins on the button that make a connection to each other when you push it. not sure what all the other pins are for.

thank you for the help, it was 86 black like you said, connected it to 12 volt source and it works great.
totally stumped, figured it was black and therefore a ground. Really appreciate it.

got dual usb charger and the horns completed, twisted the pairs thread them thru added 2 cushion clamps and 4 zip ties, keep it clean-'ish'

Everything you'd want in a horn loud and obnoxious

Pretty sure you should turn your blinkers on before you honk your horn like that. :)
