KN 3002 filter

At the top of the KN filter is a welded on nut that helps in removal. There are two little pass through holes on the removal nut.
Does anyone know what the reason is for the holes? Is it some safety reason?

Metal wire can be used to keep the filter from becoming loose. Referred to as "safety wire".

QUOTI don't understand how any wire would be a safety feature. How would you route the wire?

Google "oil filter safety wire". Lots of images there. Often used on airplanes.

Further more….That nut doesn’t let you, well, help you, take off filter either. Nut seems to be a gimmick. , but good news is the K&N filters are really good. Thick shell, good filtration, good flow rates. 👍

In the application of a standard threaded bolt (counter clockwise to loosen); the wire would be routed and secured to a nearby feature in a manner as to prevent bolt rotation if it were to come loose. It’s a secondary retention feature in situations where a helical insert has failed or the bolt has lost torque pre-load.

I disagree, I have always found the nut on the K&N usefull. On my Yukon XL the oil filter is underneath the engine and besides need to crawl underneath the engine the filter is in a recess. It is difficult to get a filter strap on. The nut on the K&N works fine. I use a socket and ratchet. That being said...I don't over tighten it.
