Crane 741 cam timing
Hi, I’m going to be fitting a crane 741 cam to my 502, hearing different things on the cam timing, do I fit it straight up or 4 degrees advanced?
|
Your choice but most installed them at 108ICL (intake centerline) and 116ECL (exhaust centerline). Neutral would be 112ICL and 112ECL.
edit in: are you degreeing it in or ??? |
Wouldn't neutral be 108 ICL and 116 Ecl . Adv 4* 104 and 112?

This is where the confusion lies.
Two camps. Those who install/set with timing wheel and those that don’t. Crane, as do many, ground the cam with 4-5* advance so that those who install cams without degreeing, should have it advanced when aligning gears ‘dot to dot.’ So, since installed ‘dot to dot’ some csll it straight up, and since it’s ground advanced, others call it advanced. This us why I speak in icl/ecl. A 112 LSA cam with no advsnce and installed neautrsl will measure 112icl/112ecl when using timing wheel. A 112 LSA cam wilth 4 degrees advance ground in installed neutral will measure 108icl/116ecl when using timing wheel. A 112 LSA cam with no advance ground in but installed 4* advance will measure 108icl/116ecl when using timing wheel. So, cam companies grind cams advanced for those that don’t have an adjustable timing chain set and aren’t going to check the timing with a wheel……,even thiugh everyone should. Hope this helps. |

Exactly, thank you. I cringe when I see people just install a cam by the marks and or utilize the gear 2/4 degree keyway (adv or retard) without taking the little extra time to degree. I’ve had to triple check my 496’s with custom grinds that were off 3 degrees.
