Fuel pump questions

First, still building my 496 stroker. It’s nearly done. Looking to fuel the beast now. Old motor had a cam driven pump. I’ll be putting an electric fuel pump in. Can I get away with any in-line pump or should I get a dedicated one like a walbro or something else? Fuel is getting dumped into marine quick fuel 850cfm carb. Has a fuel return line.

What kind of HP are you looking at? No matter what you should get a marine rated pump so you don't go boom. And lastly, an 800 is on the small side if making power. You don't size a boat carb like a street carb.

did a head swap from the pro comp heads I initially had and went with AFR heads. Should be making 600hp, but at 6000k feet in elevation I’ll only see about 500hp and will need to re-jet the carb down about 3 sizes. Also, I was wrong on the carb, it’s an 850cfm. I updated my original post reflecting that.

why not just use a mechanical pump? we ran 1300hp blower motors on just a mechanical pump and never had a problem. you just cant by a stock replacement or a cheap pump.

I don’t seem to have good luck with mechanicals. The baffle inside failed on two pumps I had earlier this season. Figured I’d try electric. Same with the water pump. Had two fail as well but, the mechanical water pumps suck bad. Both fuel and water pumps were on 454 ‘91.
