Bam 1350 gone bad
2nd run tranny went out while running about 4,500. Reverse still worked but **** down immediately and looked. Fluid in the bilge but can’t see where the heck it came from. Not the oil cooler, hoses or fittings nor the vent tube. Dip stick was grey in color and obviously smelled.
front seal blow out? What a bummer. I probably should have just used my fresh rebuilt c72’s. |
Anyone? Bought them from good long standing member here. Thought they were fresh takeouts but can’t remember.
haven’t gotten. Back to boat yet to investigate but still mind boggling where the oil blew out at and what would’ve caused the problem. |
With the cooler and such, it will be hard to get the inspection plug out to see. When mine went, I could see the front seal sticking out. It was caused by a failing drive plate.
Gray isn’t good. Probably ate something on the trans. Does a 1350 use carbon fiber clutches? It’s probably those. Interesting that it’s locked in reverse. They usually fail forward. Mine did (72c). That really sucks btw. I’m sure Marc from BAM will chime in at some point. I had fluid puke out of my port trans last time out… will be out today investigating. Hoping I do not run into any issues too. |
Bummer
Is it a plugin ? Could also be the rear seal. What drives do you have? If you send me the serial number I can tell you when we last saw it. |

I was going to post my last 20 seconds of fun that somebody video from shore but not able to load to YouTube 😂

sad but it does happen... at least it is more towards the end of the season...
|
9-10 years since it was rebuilt and 4ish since you bought them... Seals are likely long dried out and dead...grey fluid is generally not good (major service/teardown)

In this hobby I get all of it and always expect the worse and hope for the best. Just the way it is. I’m not playing down bam at all. I just wanted to confirm the history and called Tom. Now another thing I see is oil coming out my dry pipes on that side when I fired it for PS today to get it to the launch. Didn’t look like type f though but rather engine oil mixed with the water dumps. Wtf. If a trans cooler went bad I shouldn’t have had any in the bilge though. Have more than one issue going on now. Fk. I did over rev and limiters were at 7k. I was only doing a slash for shake down and not on lake MI so wasn’t a concern at this point. |
what power are you running?

I’m thinking you puked some fluid out the cooler, it lost pressure, slipped, got hot and now needs clutches, steels, seals. Not a big deal to do on that trans.

About 10 seconds before day gone bad
|
I've lost a tranny in the past by it not engaging 100% in the forward dedent... ran for 30 minutes and was toast... I've set up pressure sensors now wired into the Holley ECM's to monitor and alarm them.... Marc said the pressure is more important than the temperature!
Sounds like you need to dig into the coolers as something has let go --- oil and water shouldn't be mixing. Good Luck! |
Update - As Tom mentioned the possibility of drive failure causing more pressure on the rear seal. Unfortunately turns out that drive is fked. It’s far from turning over freely and doesn’t feel right at all. Very difficult to turn in either direction. So now a drive and tranny in order. The drive is a bigger concern now. Fun fun!!!

sm3’s Seems to me it's probably the transmission and not the drive. I'd get the drive off to see what it feels like disengaged from the trans. Maybe an issue in the tailstock? |
i have a pair of huber 1550s that have been mothballed for 10 years we are now restoring the boat and i,m thinking new tranny seals are good preventative thing to do or should i not open them up they look good no rubber checking

I’d think soaking in oil for a couple days would be ok but what do I know other than bad luck. I’ll pull my drive and see if ok less shaft. Good point Tom but I just don’t get that lucky but maybe.

I had one of my 1500's blow a front seal out a few weeks ago out of nowhere. It was just sitting on the shaft when I took the trans out it dumped all the fluid into my bilge. I feel your pain lol

Actually, my issue was at the pump up front caused by the drive plate ejecting springs and screwing the alignment.

Does that seem possible? I guess if it was completely grenaded and tore up inside I could see the prop shaft rotating hard???

Tom you were right. I pulled the drive back today and spins as free as can be. As hard as that to turn over and time even couldn’t I would’ve never thought the tranny would do that. I just don’t normally get lucky like that. Now I have to ask myself do I pull that engine and tranny and use one of my fresh stock rebuilds for another weekend or possible two of running or do I say screw it. If it was earlier in the week I’d likely do it. Realistically it would take me about 8 sober hours but still a lot of work for what little time is left up here.

I’d put your good backup in it and go boating. Your rebuild should hold up. That’s what I’d do.
