timucin i think you like stupid project almost as much as me :D

a buddy of mine and I are planning on bilding a turbine powered "pit car" for car racing. We need sometihg to lug tools and gas around with in the garage and pits and gold carts are boring and we figured we'd make a statement. If we ever get it biult i will post pics FYI the turbien is based on a few old turbo chargers :D

I just saw a used twin turbo setup for sale. Might have been in the back of current Powerboat Magazine classifieds. If your interested Ill try and track it down.

timucin 11-26-2002 07:47 PM

exactly: puder . i have to spend time by somehow...
intolerant1: i am interested ,which issue is it?
thnx all

puder 11-26-2002 07:57 PM

actually i do seem to recall it inb this months issue of powerboat now that you mentuion it. Its the issue with miss budwieser on thw cover.

Timucin, what business are you in?

Turbo's

Timucin, my father had a twin turbo set-up in his boat back in the late 70's and 80's.

the benefits where that at cruise speed you were running low boost, and can afford to run low octane gasoline. Back then you had to run high compression to make power, but with the turbo you could run 8.5 to 1 compression. Also it looked cool.

Negatives, were that the Salt air made for a lot of corrosion on the turbines, and we had to replace them every year. We would also remove the turbo's in the winter. Also, they did not have water-air coolers back then. We had an air-air cooler that would pray water on the cooler. this meant we had to have separate water tanks in the engine compartment to keep the air charge cool.

with all the advances in Superchargers, I would stick to that. We always had nothing but problems with the turbos in a saltwater environment.

Just my $.02

HP

P.S. we were making about 600 hp a piece.

HyperBaja 11-26-2002 09:32 PM

Using a blower is nice but my arguement on 'Why a turbo is better in a boat' Is this. What RPM are you turning on average?? somewhere around 3500?? thats where the turbos are spooled up making the most power.

Superchargers are good for acceleration being in how they are belt driven.

puder: my real job is importing construction materials from east(malaysia-myanmar) and south(south africa-senegal).i am working with my father, who is taking care of business for me ;) .

I also have a small speed-shop ,which specializes in importing performance parts for cars and boats. the truth about this shop is: I AM MY BEST CUSTOMER!!! ..LOL i use all the parts for myself. ;)

interested in any japanese stuff? I am lookign into importing some jap stuff its alleth rage here and a buddy of mine lives in japan and has some connections to geteth trick jap stuff nice and cheap. Hey i like big blocks but i wil gladly sell import "fast and the furious" parts to high school kids and make tons of $$$ doing it :D

HyperBaja 11-27-2002 10:16 AM

I can help selling Jap stuff too.... Get stuff for civics and integras.

Heat

Turbo's put off a considerable amount of heat. Even if the turbo is shielded it is going to give off a lot of heat. I believe in most states Turbos are Illegal in boats because of this. We had a lot of problems with the coastguard with our Turbos.

Secondly is that when you are running hard and miss the throttles you better hope that you're hands are quick. Believe me, those puppies spool up quick. It better have a rather large blow off valve, to elleviate the boost pressure behind the throttle plate. I also believe that a blow off valve is illegal in an encosed engine compartment.

Third, you have to give the motor a cool down period. You will ruin the turbo's if you shut the motor down without doing a cool down.

I am only speaking from experience, not trying to say it's a bad idea. You can make a lot of horsepower with a turbo. We were making about 600 hp with a low compression 454.

check300 11-27-2002 04:10 PM

Turbo technology has progressed a great deal in the last few years. I'm running a twin turbo bbc and making over 1300hp. Been Coast Guard inspected on a couple different occasions with no problems. With modern technology blow off valves are not needed. I am controlling boost with my engine management computer. Hope this answers some questions.

boost

Hey Check,

Just curious, how does the engine management system control the boost pressure when you suddenly pull off the throttles? How does it get rid of the back pressure behind the throttle plate in a carbureted setup? Is there a brake on the turbo or something? Cause that thing is free wheeling.

I know a lot of the centrifical blower setup's don't have blow off valves either. It has been I while since I fooled around with turbos. I wonder why the APBA made turbos Illegal?

I also hear you can make up to 1300hp with twin turbos on a Small Block Chevy.

check300 11-28-2002 06:52 PM

My set up is with EFI and we do use waste gates which are controlled by the computer. Have no idea why APBA outlawed turbos.
